Speaking out for the first time since the passing of artist Thuong Tin, Thanh Tung – the late artist's only son – officially rejected all fundraising appeals on social media, and also clearly shared the reason why he could not live with his father in his final years.
According to Dan Viet newspaper, following the passing of artist Thuong Tin, social media has been flooded with posts calling for donations under the guise of funeral assistance or helping his family. Amidst conflicting information causing public uproar, Thanh Tung decided to speak out to put an end to misunderstandings and clarify the family's stance.
Thanh Tung stated that his family did not organize any fundraising campaigns, nor did they authorize any individual or organization to do so after his father's death. He emphatically stated: "I hope everyone will stop donating. I also didn't ask anyone to organize any fundraising. The accounts that are soliciting money are not affiliated with the family."
According to Thanh Tung, the entire funeral arrangements for artist Thuong Tin were proactively handled and taken care of by his family. From the burial to the burial site, everything was completed within the family's means, without any difficulties requiring external financial assistance. Therefore, the fundraising appeals circulating online are inaccurate and easily misleading to the public.
The late artist's son also expressed his wish that the image and personal story of his deceased father not be exploited for the purpose of gaining views and likes. He shared that the family does not want to make a big deal out of it, only hoping that everything will end with respect for his father. "The family does not want to offend anyone, only hoping that my father's story will end completely. The funeral is over, the grave is settled, now let my father rest in peace," Thanh Tung said.
Recalling the final days of artist Thuong Tin, Thanh Tung affirmed that the family always followed and cared for his father. He said that musician To Hieu – who was close to Thuong Tin during his final years – was present at the funeral. Although not many artists were in attendance, the family felt that the presence of such close friends and family was enough to warm their hearts.
Regarding his personal life, artist Thuong Tin has two children with his fourth wife, who is 32 years younger than him. Thanh Tung is his eldest son, while his youngest daughter is Bui Thanh Thao. Previously, at the peak of his career, Thuong Tin married a classmate from film school. This marriage ended when Thanh Tung was only 5 years old.
After his parents divorced, Thanh Tung lived with his paternal grandparents in Phan Rang until the end of 9th grade, then moved to Ho Chi Minh City to live with his mother before she emigrated to the United States. During the time his son lived in his hometown, artist Thuong Tin occasionally visited and sent money to his grandparents for his upbringing. When Thanh Tung moved back to live with his mother, he didn't provide financial support regularly but maintained a close relationship, often taking his son out whenever possible.
Explaining why he couldn't live with his father in his final years, musician Tô Hiếu said that Thanh Tùng loved Thương Tín very much, but family circumstances didn't allow it. Thanh Tùng himself had a difficult economic situation, had to take care of his young child, and the two had many differences in personality. Despite this, they always cared for each other and kept in touch.
Previously, when speaking to the media, Thanh Tung expressed his pride in his father. He recognized artist Thuong Tin as someone with a remarkable film career, who lived honestly and with great compassion. Although he didn't fully fulfill the role of a father, in his son's eyes, the late artist Thuong Tin remains a highly respected figure.
Following Thuong Tin's passing, his son speaks out to "warn" against the fake news causing a stir.
