Singer Kim Loan: The once-peak beauty and love affair that shook Saigon politics

Kim Loan was born in Saigon into an upper-class family and no one in her family pursued art. Since childhood, she has been passionate about singing, around 1958 when Kim Loan was about 8.9 years old she attended music classes of musician Nguyen Duc. In Saigon, musician Nguyen Duc is likened to a witch who trains famous artists and singers with stage names bearing the word Kim, such as Diamond, Kim Huong, Kim Cuc, Kim Anh, Kim Loan ...

Thanks to the support of musician Nguyen Duc, Kim Loan occasionally sings in Ban Viet Nhi's program on the airwaves of Radio Saigon every Sunday morning, the first song she appeared on the radio was "Letter to Mother".

At the age of 16, Kim Loan switched to "adult" singing, first on Le Hoang Hoa's TV Night. After that, Kim Loan continued to sing at various places in the outpost to recruit soldiers.

After 9 years of "learning the religion", at the age of 17, Kim Loan "went down the mountain" and became resoundingly successful. It was August 8, 1966, Saigon people suddenly heard a strange voice on the radio, a brand new song called "Suburban House" in the bolero of musician Anh Bang.

Actually, Kim Wan's voice is nothing special. Kim Loan has a slightly hoarse voice, a little stuffy nose. Although she began to be famous, she could not compare with the stars of that time such as Phuong Dung, Hoang Oanh, Ha Thanh, Phuong Hoai Tam, Phuong Hong Hanh... is storming the Saigon stages. However, Kim Loan is blessed with a splendid beauty in the West, always bright and shimmering when stepping on stage. Therefore, although the vocalist is a little "young", the young audience loves her very much.

It can be said that the peak period of Kim Loan's singing career lasted from 1966 to 1969, during which she regularly recorded on records and appeared on the radio. In an interview on Jimmy Show, Kim Loan shared that becoming a famous singer and being loved by many viewers brought her many changes in her life both negative and positive.

But not only young audiences, even "old audiences" like President Nguyen Van Thieu are also infatuated with Kim Loan. During a singing for the ceremony attended by President Thieu, singer Kim Loan with the song "Suburban house" and his arrogant beauty captivated the "king", opening an affair scandal that shook Saigon politics.

Then through a secret channel, Thieu instructed Deng Van Quang and Lieutenant Colonel Ngan to make matchmaking. Kim Loan has been the president's baby wife in secret for nearly a year. Therefore, there is a public opinion about Kim Loan singing all night in the Independence Palace.

Not only "playing flowers to smell flowers", Nguyen Van Thieu is increasingly infatuated with Kim Loan. Every month, the president orders Dang Van Quang to organize several or three vacation and fishing trips in Phu Quoc on weekends, with the same composition as the first time.

At that time, there were many factions in the dragon palace, they sniffed that President Shao was shady, and public opinion began to tingle about the fact that the president had a baby. The story reached the ears of Mrs. Mai Anh, the first lady. She sent "spies" all the way to Phu Quoc to ambush, collect information and it was not difficult to get enough evidence of her husband's "clumsy eating".

Being a quiet person, Mai Anh tried to fight jealousy for fear of affecting her husband's career and the honor of the "first lady". She could only vent all her anger on her uncle Deng Van Quang, seeing him as the cause of leading the "king" into adultery. Knowing that the collapse would cause more trouble, Dang Van Quang urgently discussed with Nguyen Van Thieu how to "clean the edge".

One morning in early November 1969, on a flight from Saigon to West Germany, singer Kim Loan was seen still in a haughty appearance, but her face was sad. Close to the singer during the trip was Lieutenant Colonel Ngan, who "matched" her with President Thieu.

Earlier, she was alerted by Lieutenant General Dang Van Quang and asked her to arrange for temporary settlement in West Germany. So the singing career of the beautiful singer Kim Loan is considered to be over. Arriving in West Germany, she was taken by Lieutenant Colonel Ngan to settle in Cologne.

Soon after, she married a Viet Kieu. In Germany, Kim Loan worked while studying Cosmotology and was accepted to work in several beauty salons. She then opened her own beauty salon, which is in business to this day. She also occasionally participates in singing in the Vietnamese community in Germany.

In 1978, Kim Loan suddenly "switched generations" when he accepted the role of Dieu Boat in the play Cai Luong Phung Nghi Dinh by the Kim Chung troupe and the Viet Kieu Association in Paris. On this occasion, overseas Vietnamese newspapers published an investigative article about how the singer hugged the pregnant belly that President Thieu gave birth to in West Germany and disguised herself as a wedding with someone else.

For a long time, the beauty Kim Loan remained silent before the hammer of public opinion. Until recently, she accepted an interview in an overseas newspaper in which she asserted: "President Nguyen Van Thieu, Loan has not met once. To be honest, if Loan met Mr. Thieu, Loan would ask, "Mr. President, I haven't seen you once, why is it so weird?"

Wronged, he immediately asked, Loan knew that the President was also the victim of malicious gossip. But Loan thought those responsible for talking about it didn't. She saw that Mrs. Shao was so unwitting, as the wife of the President, she had to know if her husband did it or not!

She was supposed to correct her husband, she should have kept Loan's honor, but she didn't. So Loan said he was very disappointed in Ms. Thieu."

As for the reason why Kim Loan left behind her singing career at the peak of that much-desired fame to go abroad, it was because her family wanted to separate her from her first love, singer Si Phu because they did not want her to marry a husband who is a flower artist and also a year-round soldier away from home.

After traveling abroad for a short time, Kim Loan was matched by her family to a doctor named Minh, and in November 1970 she married that fellow doctor. After this, Kim Loan also focused solely on the family business and hardly appeared on stage anymore.
