At the moment, BTS is the Kpop boygroup that has achieved the most outstanding achievements.
Kpop boygroups are famous for their strong and loyal fandom. Their influence does not stop at the Korean border but also spreads to many countries. In the past, the success of boy groups was considered a key factor to pave the way for the Hallyu wave to spread to the world.
In order to re-statistical the popularity of boygroups over the years from 2010 to 2021, recently, the ranking of boy group searches on YouTube Korea over the past 12 years has been announced, and the results are not unexpected.
2010
SHINee was the most searched boygroup by Korean audiences on YouTube in 2010. The success of the hit song "Lucifer" helped the SM boy group defeat a series of big names at that time such as BIGBANG, 2PM, and BEAST.
Specifically, topping the chart in 2010 is SHINee. Followed by 2PM and CNBLUE. 4th and 5th place belongs to BIGBANG and BEAST respectively.
2011
Once "on top" last year, but suddenly SHINee mysteriously disappeared from the chart the next year. Instead, his housemate DBSK stepped in to take over No.1. In addition, CNBLUE's position was also replaced by Super Junior.
Specifically, at the top of the 2011 chart is still DBSK. Followed by 2PM and Super Junior. 4th and 5th place belongs to BIGBANG and BEAST respectively.
Year 2012
2012 is probably the happiest time for BIGBANG fans. The mini-album ALIVE and a series of hits including Blue, Bad Boy, and Fantastic Baby have confirmed that the YG boygroup is the "King of Kpop" Gen 2.
Leading the way is BIGBANG. After a year of hiatus, SHINee returned to 2nd place. Followed by Super Junior, INFINITE, and BEAST.
2013
The Kpop boygroup battle in 2013 witnessed the dominance of a completely new name - EXO. The virality of the mega hit Growl has contributed to bringing EXO from an unknown rookie to the top of Kpop's 3rd generation boy group. In addition, 2 "older" BIGBANG and SHINee continue to stay high on the list.
Specifically:
5th place: BEAST
4th place: BIGBANG
3rd place: INFINITE
2nd place: SHINee
1st place: EXO
Year 2014
EXO's glorious days lasted until the end of 2014, although the group could not release another outstanding song like Growl. This time also marked the rise of BTS to 2nd place, and SHINee continued to stay with the young idol class.
The leader is still EXO. BTS and VIXX hold 2nd and 3rd place respectively. The remaining 2 positions belong to SHINee (4th place) and INFINITE (5th place).
2015
Starting in 2015, EXO stepped back to give way to BTS's dominance. The concept of Hoa Vang Nien Hoa is extremely successful and consecutive 3 hits I Need You, Run, Dope have built BTS's strongest fandom in the entertainment industry. Another prominent Gen 3 boy group, SEVENTEEN, also appeared on the list for the first time.
Specifically, 1st and 2nd place belongs to BTS and EXO. Meanwhile, BIGBANG, SHINee and SEVENTEEN each time took 3,4,5 positions.
2016
The situation in 2016 did not change much compared to the previous year. When Kpop gradually transitioned to the heyday of the 3rd generation, BTS and EXO continued to be two names that "stirred" each other very strongly. SEVENTEEN also rose up thanks to the hit Pretty U. BIGBANG and SHINee are the only 2 Gen 2 representatives still standing.
2017
Influenced by Wanna One's spectacular debut, EXO quickly dropped from 2nd place to 3rd in the most searched Korean boygroup chart on YouTube 2017. Meanwhile, BTS started promoting a new album series with name LOVE YOURSELF and continuously achieved great achievements.
Specifically, BTS won the NO.1 position. Followed by Wanna One, EXO, SEVENTEEN and WINNER.
2018
In general, the boygroup battle in 2018 is quite similar to the previous year with the top 4 still revolving around BTS - Wanna One - EXO - SEVENTEEN. This is when the war between Gen 3 takes place extremely tense. SM also launched a new boygroup system called NCT, adding more heat to the Kpop race.
2019
After Wanna One's regretful disbandment, EXO had the opportunity to return to second place in 2019. Besides, another boygroup that came out of the Produce series, X1 also demonstrated formidable potential when "closing" the top. 5. Unfortunately, the group did not have the opportunity to shine because of the vote fraud scandal of the organizers. Of course, the top spot is still BTS.
Year 2020
BTS's position as the top boygroup has never been shaken since the group took the top spot in 2015. Except for BTS's throne, the remaining 4 rankings in the top 5 continuously reversed. NCT and SEVENTEEN's promotion, EXO's "out of time" and TXT's breakthrough potential is one of the outstanding developments of the 2020 boygroup segment. Specifically, behind BTS are SEVENTEEN, NCT, EXO and TXT.
Year 2021
The face of the boy group in 2021 is extremely interesting when from Gen 2 "old man" to Gen 3 idols all converge in the chart. BTS - SEVENTEEN and NCT are on top of the table as they continue to occupy the top 3 hottest boygroups of the year. The most surprising thing is The Boyz suddenly appearing and SHINee's comeback after 4 years of disappearing from the top.
Thus, it can be seen that BTS's peak reputation in Korea has been maintained for 7 consecutive years and shows signs of continuing for another time. In terms of long-term success and popularity, it may be difficult for the public to find a "second BTS".
In addition, SHINee is also a very respectable case when it comes to the top 5 to 7 out of 12 years of newly published data. Boygroup Gen 2 retains the most beautiful image and most sustainable reputation in Kpop right now, perhaps only SHINee is the only one.
