On the evening of August 3, the final of the Miss Universe Indonesia 2023 pageant was held in Jakarta. In the end, the beauty Fabienne Nicole Groeneveld was named for the highest position.
It seemed that the contest ended peacefully - when a potential face was found. However, soon after, the contest organizers faced a series of scandals that outraged the audience.
Most recently, the Miss Universe Indonesia 2023 Organizing Committee continues to face accusations of buying and selling the prize after the coronation of beauty Fabienne Nicole Groneveld.
Despite being supported by the majority of the home audience, Fabienne Nicole Groneveld's coronation is causing a lot of controversy on beauty forums. She was compared to 1st runner-up Vina Anggi Sitorus.
Vina is said to be more deserving of the title, because she possesses sharp, sexy beauty, and impressive performance skills. Therefore, there are many opinions that Fabienne Nicole Groneveld used the money to buy the tournament.
In response to the wave of public opinion, the organizers of Miss Universe Indonesia 2023 posted a statement, denying that the pageant sold the crown.
" Due to the news that the Miss Universe Indonesia organization has received some money from the winner, we would like to firmly and unequivocally state that these claims are baseless and false," the organizers said.
Along with that, Ms. Capella Swastika Karya (or Poppy Capella) â who currently owns the rights to the Miss Universe Indonesia pageant also posted an official statement to answer fans' questions about Fabienne Nicole Groneveld being deemed not to meet height standards.
" Our competition is held with a strong commitment, and it would be unfair to judge someone based on unimportant criteria. With a strong commitment and based on the hard work of the state competition representatives, I have decided to remove the minimum height standard," said Poppy Capella.
Despite the explanation, the statements of the organizers and Poppy Capella still did not calm the anger of the public. Many viewers even demanded a boycott of the contest.
In an earlier news that shocked the beauty world, Sally - Director of Miss Universe Bali province has denounced the "anthropometric test" at the Miss Universe Indonesia 2023 pageant.
Specifically, Sally said that in this part of the competition, the organizers made it mandatory for contestants to completely remove their clothes in front of a judge consisting of both men and women. However, it is worth mentioning that the male judges used their phones to take pictures of the girls.
Sally worries that if one of the male judges deliberately or negligently spreads the photos on social media, it will damage the lives and reputations of the contestants, especially the Muslim contestants.
In addition, according to Beritasatu, a contestant of Miss Universe Indonesia went to the police station in Jakarta with her lawyer to report harassment of her and the contestants.
The lawyer said there was ample evidence, from texts to photos and videos of the incident. The complaint accuses Capella Swastika Karya (or Poppy Capella) by name, the national director of the Miss Universe Indonesia pageant and also the national director of Miss Universe Malaysia.
In light of Sally's accusations, the Miss Universe Indonesia 2023 organisers have yet to comment on the incident. However, Miss Universe Indonesia President Eldwen Wang has now resigned after the scandal, because he received too much fierce criticism from the online community.
Indonesian media reported that Indonesian police and authorities have now taken part in the investigation, after receiving complaints from 6 contestants and their lawyers. If the allegations prove true, it is likely that the results of the Miss Universe Indonesia 2023 pageant will be cancelled.
As the controversy escalated, the Miss Universe pageant's homepage also spoke out about the incident.
" Recently, we became aware of allegations regarding the Miss Universe Indonesia 2023 pageant and the company that holds the rights to the pageant in Indonesia. Miss Universe is extremely concerned about allegations of abuse and misconduct. Creating a safe place for women is our top priority and the Miss Universe organization is looking into this," Miss Universe organizers said.
It is known that this is the first year that the Miss Universe Indonesia contest is held. Previously, the copyright to Miss Universe in Indonesia belonged to Puteri Indonesia. Therefore, the scandals after the contest made the audience even more angry.
Puteri Indonesia is a prestigious organization - there has never been a mistake in more than 2 decades of running the competition. Meanwhile, PT Capella Swastika Karya â the new unit that holds the rights to Miss Universe Indonesia is said to be inexperienced and inexperienced.
Earlier, Puteri Indonesia also revealed that they were willing to pay 10 times more but still lost the rights to Miss Universe to PT Capella Swastika Karya.
