Divorce lawyer James Simon told the Daily Mail that Angelina Jolie "feels relieved that this is over." "To be honest, Angelina is exhausted," James said on December 31.
"More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt. She and her children left all assets they had shared with Mr. Pitt. Since then, she has focused on finding peace and healing for her family," the lawyer added.
According to People, Angelina and Brad had requested a jury trial for their divorce, which was expected to last 10 to 15 days. However, they later agreed to participate in mediation without going to court.
A source close to Jolie said: "She doesn't talk about Brad Pitt in public or in private. She's been trying her best to make a brighter life after a dark time."
Angelina Jolie filed for divorce on September 19, 2016, shortly after the family's private flight from France to the US - where Angelina accused Brad of influencing her and their 6 children. Brad Pitt was investigated by the FBI for domestic abuse, but later the authorities declared that there was not enough evidence and dropped the case.
In 2019, the former couple was granted a divorce and became legally single. However, the divorce is not final because the two are fighting over child custody. Currently, most of their children are adults, except for twins Knox and Vivienne, 16 years old.
While Mr. and Mrs. Smith have settled their divorce, they are still involved in another lawsuit involving the Miraval estate and winery in France. Brad is suing Angelina for selling her stake in the winery to the Russian billionaire's Stoli Group without his consent.
In June 2016, Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt over a series of disagreements, stemming from allegations that the actor had been violent towards her and their children. However, Pitt was never charged with any criminal offenses, and Jolie later declined to prosecute. Throughout the divorce period, the two stars continued to face off in many legal battles.
First, Angelina Jolie won the custody battle. Then, Brad Pitt filed a series of lawsuits against his ex-wife in Luxembourg, California, France over the $164 million Château Miraval estate and initially won.
As for Jolie, the Maleficent star accused her ex-husband of influencing her. Jolie won a legal victory in November when a judge ruled that Pitt must release documents, including emails and text messages, that Jolie's lawyer, Paul Murphy, had requested. In addition, the children, Zahara, Vivienne and most recently Shiloh, have dropped Pitt from their last name.
Producer Danny Rossner had wanted to cast the estranged ex-husband and wife in his new film, based on the true story of hotelier Emmanuel Martinez. Rossner, who is best known for his comedy 2001: A Space Travesty, said he believed Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt could "put their differences aside" to pursue his 20-year passion project.
But sources close to Brad Pitt insist that there's no way the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood actor would agree to work with someone who has caused him such heartache.
An insider told DailyMail: "No amount of money will get Brad to appear in a movie with Angelina again. It will definitely attract public attention, but it's not something he'll consider for a minute. They're sworn enemies now, so there's no way Brad would want to talk to Angelina on screen."
