Recently, the world of modeling was shocked by the news that famous model Lucy Markovic passed away at the ag.e of 27 after a long battle with cerebral arteriovenous malformation. Lucy Markovic's boyfriend sadly shared that she passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family during her final moments.

Before passing away, the model underwent emergency surgery and then fell into a coma earlier this week. On her personal Instagram page, Lucy Markovic's last post was on March 6. The Next Top Model runner-up shared a photo of herself lying in a hospital bed and talked about her health.

"Lucky luck - after radiation, seizures, heavy medication and a challenging four years, I'm due to undergo brain surgery on the 26th of this month to treat an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) at the back of my brain, the size of a golf ball. (The surgery has now been rescheduled for April 2.)

I feel excited, grateful, anxious, loved and hopeful. Emotions are flooding back. Life is a journey and I am ready for the next chapter." What is AVM? What causes it?

AVM (arteriovenous malformation) of the brain is a tangle of abnormal bloo.d vessels connecting arteries and veins in the brain. Arteries are responsible for carrying oxygen-rich bloo.d from the heart to the brain. Veins carry oxygen-depleted bloo.d back to the lungs and heart, and in an AVM this process is disrupted.

Arteriovenous malformations can develop anywhere in the body, but they most commonly occur in the brain or spine. However, cerebral arteriovenous malformations are rare, affecting less than 1% of the population.

The cause of cerebral arteriovenous malformations is currently unknown, but researchers believe that most cerebral arteriovenous malformations usually appear during fetal development. Anyone can be born with cerebral arteriovenous malformations.
