Yves Saint Laurent is one of the most famous fashion designers in the world. But his life was full of ups and downs, sometimes at the peak of his career, sometimes falling into the abyss of life.
Natural talent
Yves Saint Laurent (full name Yves Henri Donat Mathieu Saint Laurent) was born in 1936 in Oran - the northwestern city of Algeria. He is the son of the director of an insurance company, born into a noble French family. From an early age, Yves Saint Laurent showed an early talent for design, the boy made paper dolls or designed dresses for his mother and sister, but he was not encouraged by his family to pursue this industry.
At the age of 17, he participated in a design competition, the competition jury included the big names of the garment village of that time, including Balmain, Givenchy and Balenciaga. Yves won first prize in this contest. From here, his father acknowledged his son's talent and agreed to let Yves enroll in the design school of the garment industry.
In his youth, Yves Saint Laurent was considered to have the best beauty with a high nose bridge, angular face, and captivating eyes. There is an irresistible charm in him, especially when looking at him focusing on his work to create fashion products, there is a charm that makes viewers unable to take their eyes off.
After graduating from school, Yves Saint Laurent went to Paris to start his career with "capital" as the first prize of the International Wool Secretariat contest with the design of a cocktail dress in 1954. Yves Saint Laurent's design talent caught the eye. by Michel de Brunhoff, former director of the famous Vogue magazine. This director introduced Yves to a friend of his, the famous fashion designer Christian Dior.
In 1955, Dior invited Yves Saint Laurent for an internship and two years later appointed him to the position of assistant. Yves has had a spectacular start as art director. Here, he produced exquisite designs in every detail, demonstrating his natural talent to the whole world.
Sometimes at the top, sometimes at the bottom
In 1957, Christian Dior died unexpectedly after a heart attack. At the age of 21, Yves inherited a huge legacy, succeeding the throne at the Dior fashion empire. Here he writes a story of hard work and dedication. He buried himself in his work, locked himself in a room, drawing up to 800 different sketches for a collection.
For three years in a row, he is the only person to carry out 6 fashion collections for Dior, 3 sets for spring and summer, 3 sets for autumn and winter. The culmination of this design legend was that in a single night, Yves Saint Laurent drafted 1,000 models, and then selected the focal point for the launch of the first collection under Dior in January 1958. .
In 1960, Yves Saint Laurent was drafted into the army according to French regulations. However, his service in the army lasted only 20 days, due to depression that he had to be treated in a mental hospital. Desperately depressed, Yves Saint Laurent no longer wanted to work in the fashion industry and left Dior.
However, with the encouragement of his homosexual lover Pierre Bergé, Yves Saint Laurent opened his own fashion brand, and in 1961, the dream of vanity began. Pierre Bergé persuaded American billionaire J.Marck Robinson to sponsor the first fashion collection under the label YSL, which stands for Yves Saint Laurent.
After recovering and receiving financial and spiritual support, only 10 years after its launch, the YSL brand has gained a foothold in the market both in terms of revenue and prestige. The 60s were the most brilliant years in the career of this prestigious fashion house. Yves Saint Laurent rocked the fashion world with his daring collections and bold innovations in the fashion industry.
His collection "Le Smoking" unleashed the rebellious spirit of women, creating trends that spread throughout both France and America. He also confirmed his name through a series of revolutionary costumes for women such as see-through dresses (1966), jackets (1962), jumpsuits (1968).. .
However, fame did not make Yves Saint Laurent feel happy. Depression and the pressure of the vanity industry made Yves miserable. Unable to bear the pressure, Saint Laurent turned to drugs, alcohol and debauched pleasures. Referring to his life partner, Pierre Bergé said: "Yves Saint Laurent loves art and fashion but hates everyday life". But Bergé also has to admit that: "Great collections have been created in drugs and alcohol".
In 2002, the designer launched his last haute couture collection and decided to withdraw from the fashion industry, realizing that the new fashion industry was invaded by commercial interests rather than art. Yves Saint Laurent died in 2008 of brain cancer, aged 71. His passing has ended a life of great ups and downs, but the peak values of art, spirit, passion and creative desire remain forever.
Love has 1-0-2
It would be remiss not to mention Pierre Bergé, the partner who was with Yves Saint Laurent at the peak of his fame and at the very bottom of his life. They are two talented men from two completely different worlds. Yves Saint Laurent is a talented stylist with an artist soul with a sensitive heart. Pierre Bergé is again a keen businessman with profit figures.
The Yves Saint Laurent brand was founded and developed by such two complementary extremes. When Yves met and fell in love with Pierre in the late 1950s, they tacitly defined their work roles for the next 40 years. Yves Saint Laurent is an artist, creator; Bergé is the manager, who removes all obstacles in Yves's path and runs the rest.
At Yves Saint Laurent, there are always two opposites: excitement, love of life and despair, eagerness for passion but shyness in front of life. With a sensitive heart, Yves' mood is always unpredictable and unrestrained. But Pierre Bergé was the only one who could put aside all these irregularities to be with Yves.
Nothing can describe Pierre Bergé's heartache when he has to see his beloved become increasingly depressed and lead a depraved lifestyle. After nearly 20 years of living together, Pierre Bergé decided to move out, but continued to run the company, working with Yves Saint Laurent until the designer announced his retirement in 2002. Pierre Bergé via died in 2017 in the mourning of his admirers and the love between two talented but opposite people.
It can be said that Yves Saint Laurent became one of the two most important fashion designers of the 20th century, changing the lives of women all over the world. Each of his design collections is born to represent modern and innovative ways, eliminating the stereotypes that always constrain women.
"I don't like making women an abstraction of fashion. I don't like saying 'you have to dress like this'... I'm not a dictator," says Yves Saint Laurent.
He has "empowered women" by designing see-through tops, safari jackets, and men's-only innovations. It can be said that his contribution and influence in the fashion industry has made him a great legend and is remembered by millions of women around the world.
