VTV once again became the focus of public criticism when an editor misread important information in a sports news bulletin. The mistake, though small, caused a wave of public outrage.
Fatal error in sports news
On the evening of July 29, millions of Vietnamese football fans focused their attention on the final match of the U23 Southeast Asia Cup between U23 Vietnam and U23 Indonesia. This was a highly anticipated match, where the Golden Star Warriors were determined to defend their championship title. However, the joy and excitement of the audience was mixed with confusion when a VTV editor misread the name of the tournament.
Instead of calling it "Southeast Asia U23 Final", the BTV said it was "Asian U23 Final". This is a huge difference in the scale and nature of the tournament, which surprised many viewers. The Southeast Asia U23 tournament is a regional tournament, while the Asian U23 tournament is a continental tournament, with a completely different level of competition and meaning.
Although U23 Vietnam had successfully defeated U23 Indonesia, successfully defending the championship, the joy of victory still could not cover up the disappointment of the audience about the mistake of the national television station. Notably, after the error was discovered, the related video seemed to have been "erased", making public opinion even more indignant.
VTV's series of mistakes: "The last straw"?
The BTV's misreading of the U23 match was not the first mistake, or more accurately, the "last straw" in a series of serious mistakes that VTV has made recently. In just a few months, the station has been continuously involved in many controversies related to the quality of information and professionalism, causing significant damage to its reputation.
Most recently, on July 24, in the 7 p.m. news bulletin, a VTV editor mistakenly read information about "armed clashes on the border between Vietnam and Thailand," instead of between Cambodia and Thailand. This mistake caused great confusion among the public and forced VTV's General Director to apologize to the people. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also asked VTV to review, clarify responsibilities, and strictly handle related individuals and units.
Furthermore, in a program broadcast on the night of July 4, VTV made a mistake when changing Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's last name to "Nguyen Minh Chinh". VTV then had to issue a "sincere apology" and remove related videos.
Previously, VTV2 channel even reported incorrectly about the passing of player Diogo Jota (Liverpool Club), when it recorded the year of death as 2005 instead of 2025, "shortening" the player's lifespan by 20 years.
Furthermore, on the 30/4 Grand Ceremony, VTV made people unhappy because of the poor image and sound quality during the live broadcast of the military parade in Ho Chi Minh City. In 2015, the station was also fined for providing false information in the program "7th Wish" related to the character's family situation.
These repeated errors, especially in news and sports news - content that is official and widely spread - are causing the public to raise big questions about the content censorship process at VTV. Some opinions also say that these errors are not just mistakes but also show a lack of professionalism, and can even cause significant social consequences.
As people increasingly access information from a variety of sources, trust in mainstream media channels such as VTV is crucial. Repeated errors will gradually erode audience trust, especially in rural areas where television remains the primary means of getting news.
Fans and the public are expecting VTV to have stronger and more effective corrective measures to ensure information quality, worthy of its role as a national television station.
