Actor Ma Duc Hoa has always received admiration for maintaining a strong marriage for 54 years with his wife outside the industry, a rare bond in the volatile entertainment industry.
Referring to Ma Duc Hoa, most of the audience will immediately remember the image of the Eight Kingdoms in the classic film Journey to the West 1986. With his natural, graceful and emotional acting, he breathed life into the character vividly, successfully portraying an image that is both humorous and greedy but still sincere and emotional. This role not only helped his name make a deep impression but also became an indelible memory in the hearts of many generations of audiences.
Born in 1945 in Shandong, Ma Duc Hoa was a hyperactive boy from an early age. His family soon oriented him to study martial arts to train discipline and physicality. After that, he gradually fell in love with the art of drama and had a long time of working and training in large art troupes. It was this methodical training process that helped him build a solid acting foundation, creating a premise for important steps in his later career.
The big turning point in his artistic life came in 1982 when director Duong Jiet chose him to play the role of Tru Ba Kai in the project Journey to the West. This is an iconic role that requires a combination of acting skills, incarnation, and perseverance in extremely harsh filming conditions. During the years-long filming process, Ma Duc Hoa had to endure thick and heavy makeup, harsh weather and significant health effects. At one point, his skin was damaged by glue and makeup materials. However, he always kept a professional working spirit, did not complain and even took on many other supporting roles in the film crew.
In contrast to the "eager" image on the screen, in real life Ma Duc Hoa is a very loyal and simple man. He married Mrs. Hau Ngoc Man through matchmaking and quickly built a strong home. Their relationship has been maintained for more than half a century, becoming one of the admirable marriages in the art world. That attachment not only comes from love but also from understanding, sharing and accompanying in all stages of life.
During the filming of Journey to the West, which lasted about 4 years, Mrs. Hau Ngoc Man alone shouldered the family so that her husband could pursue his work with peace of mind. The couple mainly communicated with each other via handwritten mail, with a total of about 300 letters sent home by Ma Dehua. Notably, during a serious incident, she chose to hide her husband so that he would not be distracted, continuing to focus on the recording process. This detail further shows the silent sacrifice and deep affection between the two.
After achieving great success as the Eight Kingdoms, Ma Duc Hoa still maintains a private lifestyle, stays away from the market and does not participate in scandals in the entertainment world. In her late twenties, Ma Duc Hoa still occasionally appeared in cultural activities, participated in dubbing cartoons and interacted with the audience. Although he is no longer as active in artistic activities as before, he still retains the love of the public thanks to his close and friendly image. Most of the time, he enjoys an idyllic life with his wife and family, away from the noise of showbiz.
