Tom Cruise has worried producers of the Paris Olympics closing ceremony by wanting to jump from the roof of the Stade de France stadium without a safety harness. The Hollywood star said the harness would have made the action less dramatic.
Tom Cruise stunned the world after jumping from the roof of the Stade de France stadium, about 42m high, during the Olympic flag handover at the closing ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France, on the evening of August 11 (local time). The Mission Impossible-style action scene was considered one of the highlights of the event, making Parisian art overshadowed by Hollywood.
To prepare for the performance, Tom had to put on a safety harness before plunging to the ground in front of thousands of spectators and Olympic athletes.
In the eyes of others, the performance was truly eye-catching and classy. However, the actor born in 1962 seemed not really satisfied with what he had shown.
Insiders told the Daily Mail that Tom had a heated argument with the producers of the closing show backstage over wanting to do the jump without a safety harness. "Tom helped create the stunt and said he needed to do something he had never done before. He argued with the producers about the clearly visible safety harness. He felt it made the jump not realistic enough and didn't go down as fast as he wanted. People close to him advised him not to jump and to stop throwing himself into so many deadly stunts. It's one thing when he's filming, but another when he's doing it at the Olympics. It's worrying," the source said.
According to sources, Tom Cruise is well aware of the risks involved but is not concerned. In his mind, the actor believes himself to be larger than life and refuses to back down.
"Part of the belief has to do with the fact that he is one of the greatest action movie stars of all time. Part of it has to do with the Napoleon complex. The other reality is that he is almost a demigod in his religion. But he is not 25 anymore, not even 35 or 45," the person close to him analyzed.
Despite Tom Cruise's daredevilry, the closing ceremony organizers couldn't agree with him. They were concerned that the stunt could backfire, with the actor facing the risk of serious injury or death. In the end, as the world could see, Tom Cruise landed with a clear safety rope on his back.
Known as one of Hollywood's top action stars, Tom Cruise is no stranger to daring stunts. He often performs difficult scenes in his movies, such as jumping off tall buildings, fighting with samurai swords, or climbing mountains without protection.
Just in July, he was seen hanging from the outside of a plane while filming the new Mission: Impossible film. In 2010, he dangled nearly 2,700 feet from the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, in Dubai, for the fourth Mission: Impossible film.
However, not all of Tom's stunts have gone smoothly. In 2017, the actor broke his ankle while jumping off a building on the set of Mission Impossible 6 in London.
Outside of film, Tom Cruise is also an interesting and unique character. Before entering the acting industry, he grew up in a devout Catholic family and attended the Franciscan Seminary as a teenager. But while on the path to becoming a priest, Cruise took a major turn to pursue acting.
Tom Cruise's childhood was far from idyllic. He grew up in near poverty with an abusive father who frequently broke things. Cruise was small for his age and was always sad, often bullied by other children.
Tom Cruise struggled with dyslexia as a child. He overcame his challenges in life and today the star draws strength and inspiration from his past as well as maintaining a close relationship with his mother.
While filming The Last Samurai, Tom Cruise studied Japanese for three months to deliver some of his lines authentically in Japanese. He visits Japan so often that the country even gave him a "Tom Cruise Day," which is celebrated in Japan every October 10.
Tom Cruise is the first actor to appear in five consecutive films that each grossed over $100 million: A Few Good Men, The Firm, Interview With The Vampire, Mission Impossible and Jerry Maguire. All of these films helped solidify Tom Cruise's career and make him a legend.
