Taylor Swift is facing a new copyright lawsuit over the Lover book that came with her 2019 album of the same name.
In a complaint filed in federal court in Tennessee on August 23, author Teresa La Dart claims that "some creative elements" from the poet's 2010 book Lover were included in the book. by Swift - a publication accompanying the singer's special edition CD Lover.
La Dart's attorney wrote in the lawsuit that Swift's books infringed La Dart's copyright and that the star now owes "more than a million dollars" in damages.
La Dart's attorney, William S. Parks, wrote in the lawsuit, "The defendant has so far not expressed a will or actively consulted Teresa La Dart regarding her creative design rights, nor has she ever sought advice from Teresa La Dart. give any support to Teresa La Dart... let alone pay the money".
Similarities between La Dart's book and Swift's book are said to include the cover's use of "powder pink and blue" and an image of the author "taken in a crouched position".
Ms La Dart also claimed Swift copied the book's "content representation format", specifically "recollections shared through both writing and images". La Dart said the book's interior design, which includes "interlaced photographs and articles" - also infringes the author's copyright.
Commenting on this lawsuit, legal experts informed Billboard that the allegation is very suspicious and unlikely to succeed.
Aaron Moss, a veteran litigator at Greenberg Glusker and also a writer on copyright lawsuits at the Copyright Lately website, said: "In my opinion, the plaintiff has not stated anything about the similarity in the content. The idea of writing a memoir by alternating text and pictures is unlikely to be litigated, because if it did, the person could also sue anyone who has ever written a diary or made a scrapbook. ".
According to Billboard, although Swift's titles and La Dart's books are identical, copyright law usually doesn't protect each title. And the name Lover is not exclusive to La Dart's books. Records from the US Copyright Office show there are more than a dozen other books with the same title.
This lawsuit is just one of several that Swift has faced over the years. The star's lawyers are also defending her in a lengthy lawsuit related to the song "Shake It Off". Musicians Shawn Hall and Nathan Butler have stated that Taylor's 2014 hit, Shake It Off, reproduces the 2001 song Playas Gon' Play written and performed by girl group 3LW.
Earlier this month, Swift asserted, "Until learning of Plaintiff's complaint in 2017, I had never heard the song 'Playas Gon' Play' and had never heard of that song or the 3LW team. " - Taylor said in a statement - "None of the CDs I have listened to as a child, or later, are by 3LW".
The University of Texas recently gave students the opportunity to study the songs of Taylor Swift and the literary works of Shakespeare, John Keats and Robert Frost. .
CNN reports that the University of Texas at Austin is now offering "The Taylor Swift Songbook" course as part of its liberal arts honors program. The course comes after New York University held a Taylor Swift-themed class last spring.
British professor Elizabeth Scala chose Taylor Swift because her lyrics can help demystify techniques similar to classical poetry. The professor said the course has nothing to do with Swift's fame or popularity.
"The course focuses on analyzing Taylor's songs and how she uses traditional literary elements, images, and poetic images in songs as literary works," Elizabeth Scala told CNN.
According to CNN, students taking the course will learn about Swift songs along with works of Western literature.
"Students are asked to analyze and contextualize issues common across the centuries," says Scala.
Scala identifies herself as a Swifties (the name of Taylor Swift's fan community) and says her goal is to teach traditional literature through a contemporary lens.
"I wanted to show them how Taylor Swift uses traditional literature in her writing, both in subject matter as well as references, metaphors, and clever use of words," Scala said.
"In analyzing Taylor's lyrics, I show students that the measures she uses are appropriate for all forms of writing," the University of Texas professor added.
Scala says the class mainly focuses on recent Swift songs, but students are still free to discuss older songs. The course also addresses themes of gender, authenticity, fan influence on artists and writers, and how traditional language enriches the reading experience.
