Actor Mark Hamill, famous for his role as Luke Skywalker in 'Star Wars', had an embarrassing moment when his pants suddenly fell down to his knees while he was giving a speech at the BAFTA film awards ceremony on the evening of February 16.
The incident happened in front of a large audience of artists at the Royal Festival Hall in London as well as nearly 4 million viewers watching live television. In the middle of talking about his love of movies, Mark Hamill was embarrassed because his pants fell down.
"For me, movies create such vivid worlds and powerful stories that we completely lose ourselves," the 73-year-old star finished, nervously reaching down to pull up the waistband of his pants. He quickly adjusted his outfit, tucked in his shirt, and continued his speech smoothly as if nothing had happened. He then read the list of "Best Picture" nominees and announced that Conclave had won.
A front row guest told The Sun: "As Mark started speaking, his trousers fell to his knees. They looked too big for him. Big stars like Timothée Chalame, Ariana Grande, Adrien Brody all saw this scene from their perspective. Most of the guests looked horrified but said nothing. It was a moment you wouldn't believe if you hadn't seen it with your own eyes. They turned to look at each other with wide eyes as if to say: What just happened?".
Luckily, the stage podium helped to cover up the awkward situation for the Hollywood actor. He was praised for handling the incident professionally.
The insider added that guests continued to talk about Mark Hamill's pants at the after-party. "It was a nightmare for a big star, but Mark handled it well. Maybe next time he needs a better belt," the source said.
Mark Hamill was born in 1951 in California, USA. He is best known for his leading role as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars series from 1977 to 2019. He has also appeared in dozens of films and television series, and has voiced the Joker in DC Comics animated projects, starting with Batman: The Animated Series in 1992. He married dental specialist Marilou York in 1978 and has three children.
Back to the BAFTs, according to Deadline, the British Academy, which awards the BAFTAs, has hundreds of voters in common with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which awards the Oscars. And their choice is to split some of the big prizes among the top films.
Accordingly, Conclave won 4 awards including Best Film, Best British Film, Film Editing and Best Adapted Screenplay.
The Brutalist won four awards including Best Director for Brady Corbet and Best Actor for Adrien Brody, Cinematography and Original Score.
The Brutalist, though, lost Best Original Screenplay to Jesse Eisenberg's A Real Pain. Arguably, A Real Pain wasn't even nominated for Best Picture.
Anora also unexpectedly lost the Original Screenplay award despite having just won the biggest award of the Writers Guild of America at the WGA awards ceremony on February 15 in this category.
Taking a completely different path, BAFTA only gave Anora two awards. One was for casting, which went to Sean Baker and Samantha Quan; and the other was for Best Actress, which went to Mikey Madison - surprisingly beating Demi Moore from The Subtance.
Madison lost to Demi at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice, but there are still two other Oscar pre-shows to turn the tide: SAG and Independent Spirit, then the Oscars on March 3.
In other news, both of this year's big winners at BAFTA, Conclave and The Brutalist, failed to win any awards from the PGA (Motion Picture Association of America), DGA (Directors Guild of America) or WGA. Conclave won the Golden Globe and Critics' Choice awards earlier.
Deadline commented that it was unusual that Conclave - which won Best Film at BAFTA - did not win in any major categories of the above important US professional associations.
Conclave still has a chance at the upcoming SAG Awards, but those awards are not expected to have a direct impact on the Oscars. Voting for the Oscars ends next week.
In fact, until Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer sweeps both the Oscars and BAFTAs in 2024, the two major British and American film awards have not agreed on Best Picture for nine years.
The only exception was 2020, in the midst of COVID-19, when Nomadland won both in a very strange season.
