South Korea's top news channel JTBC has continued to apologize through a live broadcast, after they realized that the "evidence" video they aired that caused SUGA to be in crisis was false.
"JTBC released a news report on BTS member Suga's drunk driving incident on August 7. In the first part of the news, we aired CCTV footage of a tram passing through a main road. Police investigation later confirmed that the man in the video was not Suga. We apologize for the confusion."
This is the second correction from JTBC News to clarify the false CCTV footage of BTS Suga's drunk driving incident. The station previously confirmed the mistake in a press release.
"Shortly after Suga's drunk driving incident, JTBC aired CCTV footage of a motorcycle traveling on the main road opposite Nine One Hannam, around the time the police spotted the BTS member. However, after further investigation into the routes and other details, the police confirmed that the motorcyclist in the video was not Suga."
According to Donga Ilbo, the only authentic CCTV footage of the incident was released in their report. BTS's management company, BIGHIT Music, also confirmed that the man in the CCTV footage released by Donga was Suga. Therefore, the two CCTV footages previously released by JTBC News and Yonhap News were both inaccurate. While JTBC has issued an official apology, Yonhap News has remained silent.
As one of Korea's top TV channels, JTBC releasing an exclusive report on Suga's drunk driving case without ensuring its authenticity is definitely an irreparable mistake.
Even now, even though Suga has proven that what he wrote in his official apology is true, the public reaction has not changed. The situation has gotten worse as fans brought funeral wreaths and trucks to parade around the HYBE building demanding Suga to leave BTS.
After being involved in the "fermented barley" scandal, SUGA's commercial contracts have been affected. Specifically, Samsung Germany recently shared an image of Suga - a member of the group BTS - in an advertisement for the company's new product. Along with that, the company also posted a poll about 3 members: Suga, RM and Jimin. However, immediately after posting, this Samsung Germany account deleted both the photo of the K-Pop star and the poll.
Suga's sudden removal of an ad is believed to be related to his drunk driving scandal, which has been receiving a lot of attention from the male idol. After the BTS member was charged with drunk driving, additional details from the police were released, including the star's testimony as well as CCTV footage related to the incident. This has led to him being criticized more than ever.
BTS has been collaborating with Samsung for many years, appearing in many commercials and major events as a top K-Pop group. Therefore, the audience believes that the removal of Suga's image without any explanation may be due to the company's concern about the male idol's negative impact on the brand's image.
At present, a part of fans still speak up to defend, affirming their loyalty to this star. However, the majority of the audience believes that Suga's actions are extremely reprehensible and need to be boycotted. Many people even sent protest wreaths in front of HYBE Group's gate, asking him to leave the group.
