6 years ago, Son Suk Ku was still a name that did not exist in the Korean entertainment industry. He is the CEO of his family's mechanical component manufacturing company. However, thanks to his role as Mr Goo in 'My Freedom Diary', the actor 1 night became a sensation throughout Korea and Asia.
Son Suk Ku was born in 1983, is a talented actor of the Korean screen today. According to Korean media reports, Son Suk Ku was born into a famous business family. However, instead of inheriting his parents' property, he prefers to pursue an artistic path.
Son Suk Ku started studying abroad in middle school, in Canada and the US. With the dream of becoming a documentary filmmaker, the actor studied visual arts and film at the School of Art Institute of Chicago (USA) for a long time. Therefore, it was not until the age of 31 that Son Seok Koo had the opportunity to fall in love with the home screen.
Compared to colleagues of the same age, this 8x actor, although he entered the profession later, soon made a mark. He quickly became a face appreciated by Korean experts and fans. The beginning of 2022 is a memorable milestone for Son Suk Ku after taking on the male lead role Mr. Gu in the TV blockbuster My Liberation Notes (My Freedom Diary). With the image of a sloppy, mysterious and careless guy with life, the 8x male star has surprised and impressed viewers with his acting skills.
At the end of 10 episodes, My Free Diary achieved a huge rating in Korea, and always ranked at the top on the Netflix platform and received a "rain of compliments" from audiences across Asia. The success of the film must be attributed to the efforts of Son Suk Ku as well as other talented actors.
After the movie, it is not an exaggeration to say that the whole universe is revolving around the name Son Suk Ku. Son Suk Ku became a hot name of Korean cinema at this time when "bombarding" both the small screen and the big screen. Few people think that Son Suk Ku used to be an introverted, quiet teenager. That made his father worried and decided to send his son to Canada to study, to a new, more open environment. At that time, Son Suk Ku was in middle school.
The actor's real life is as interesting and intriguing as the character he played in My Freedom Diary. He was born into a family with a business with an annual profit of about 5.5 billion Won. However, he prefers to live a life of adventure, rather than carry on the family business.
Son Suk Ku went to the US to study abroad since middle school. When he reached the age of enlistment, he registered to go to Iraq because he wanted to experience life in the Middle Eastern country. The rate of competition in infantry applications at that time was as fierce as the competition for the main roles in blockbuster movies.
Son Suk Ku, who studied fine arts and film at the University of the Arts Chicago, cherished the dream of becoming a documentary film director. But the days of enlistment made him change a lot of thoughts, wanting to do more practical work. Returning to the US, he thought about his future path, did all kinds of manual labor, and then used the money he had saved to move to Vancouver, Canada to live.
Loving basketball, Son Suk Ku once considered following a sports path. But after a period of practice, he realized he was not suitable, so he gave up. After reading about the acting academy online, he actively signed up. After three months of experimenting, he felt full of interest in this subject, so he continued to study for two years.
While in Canada, he participated in several independent films, acted in plays, was selected to act in American films, but because his visa expired, he was forced to return home. For an expatriate of more than 10 years like Son Suk Ku, Korea then became a foreign land, it took time to adapt from the beginning. He acted in plays in his hometown of Daejeon and joined the Seoul University choir. Suggested by members of the crew, he learned how to make resumes, upload actor recruitment websites and initially look for job opportunities.
Son Suk Ku reflects on a career with a late start but growing: "I feel that the accumulated time in the past is very valuable. From the past, I was ambitious. Waiting patiently, accumulating internal strength, I think I'm gradually making an impression on people."
Nearly 10 years of operation in Korean showbiz, Son Suk Ku has only one scandal. Last August, a person named A claimed to have been a witness in the case of the actor's school violence in middle school. According to A, Suk Ku chose to bully the weaker people. He hit the victim in the head, took off his shoes and hit the victim. Despite the victim's report, the school covered up the incident.
This person continued to give more details over the past half year. In response, Son Suk Ku's management company said the information was fake. The actor also posted an affirmation that he did not do such acts and announced a lawsuit against the slanderer.
Talking about his roles and life, Son Suk Ku once shared , "I love all the movies I've been in, but I'm especially attached to this one. I've read every comment since the drama aired. I used to wonder why the movie didn't get a lot of attention even though I found it really interesting, but the director said we should wait a bit longer and since the scene where Gu picked up Mi Jeong's hat - then, Mr. Gu is ready to open his heart and become a living being - the drama is starting to gain more traction."
For the actor born in 1983, acting is worth more than a career. That's also how he lives and feels: "Actor is someone who gets paid to express emotions. That's probably why I always feel psychological treatment when acting. When you are assigned a character. and being allowed to play with it, it's a healing process. In fact, those are the feelings inside of me, and I understand myself better when I fully express those feelings through acting."
And certainly the audience can not only see a Son Suk Ku in the position of an actor. Writing and telling stories was something that followed Son Suk Ku during his days of nurturing his dream of becoming a documentary director. Currently, he maintains a daily writing habit.
Talking about the dream movie, the actor shared: "It will not be a movie where when you watch it, you see the director wants to convey this message in that detail. I want to give the audience the feeling of watching it. a mini-series of short documentaries about people. The most important thing is empathy. I want the audience to conjure up their own stories while watching the film in this way."
