Referring to the legendary groups of Kpop, SNSD is definitely indispensable. Although no longer as active as before, this "national group" is forever a solid "wall" that no other group can break.
SNSD, also known as Girls' Generation, is a girl group with a 9-member lineup under SM entertainment - one of the 3 big boys specializing in training Kpop groups. In 2007, SNSD released the album Into The New Word officially launched with Kpop fans. With the image of beautiful, pure girls with vibrant dance moves, SNSD's enthusiasm quickly won the hearts of music fans.
The journey to become the goddess of Korean entertainment
SM Entertainment officially launched SNSD in 2007 but during the previous two years, the project to create a female version of Super Junior has attracted the attention of the public. Initially, there were even rumors that SM would name the new group Super Girls with eleven members.
With the same role as Super Junior, the boy group was popular at that time, making SNSD automatically become a "bad guy" in the eyes of a part of fans. SNSD also suffered because of dating rumors with seniors and became the envy of female fans.
It can be seen that SNSD is a very carefully prepared group when half of the girls have a rather long training period. Hyoyeon, Sooyoung, and Seohyun all trained for almost seven years.
The group's name is derived from the song Girls' Generation released in 1989 by Lee Seungchul. The name means Age of Girls, signaling that a generation of girls' rule is near.
Although it has more or less resonated since its debut in 2007, it was not until 2009 with Gee that SNSD really stepped up to become one of the top Kpop groups.
The title song "Gee" in the Mini Album of the same name helped the group set the record for the longest consecutive No.1 time on KBS Music Bank for a group (9 consecutive weeks). This is also the song with the highest number of sales in 2009 and at the same time the MV with the first 100 million views by a K-pop girl group.
On December 9, 2010, SNSD became the first girl group to win the Daesang Album award at the Golden Disk Awards. 2nd studio album titled Oh! helped SNSD to enter history when becoming the first and only girl group to win the Daesang Album award at the Golden Disk Awards.
With 334,785 copies sold (including the Repackage version) helping Oh! overcome many other big names to get this noble award. This can be considered as one of the most important milestones in SNSD's career.
In May 2012, SNSD's first Japanese album was certified million copies. Not only causing a storm in the country, but when attacking the Japanese music market, SNSD continued to continue their success chain when their first Japanese album Girls' Generation was certified for million copies.
With this achievement, SNSD has become the first K-pop group and the second K-pop artist after BoA to have a music product that has sold over 1 million copies in the land of the rising sun.
Not stopping here, at the 2013 YouTube Music Awards, SNSD surprised the Western media when they won the Video of the Year award with I Got A Boy.
It is noteworthy that the group surpassed many big names at that time such as Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, PSY, One Direction or Miley Cyrus to hold this award. I Got A Boy also set a record at that time when it was the fastest Kpop MV to reach 20 million views (within 6 days).
With the achievements that have been achieved since their debut, SNSD has been ranked at number 1 by Billboard in the list of Top 10 best girl groups of the decade 2010s.
Not only was Billboard highly appreciated for their music or image, but the group also received many compliments for their good teamwork as well as the members shining in their own roles.
Since then, SNSD's position has increased, becoming the most "swordfish" girl group in Kpop with huge advertising contracts from cosmetic brands, fashion, watches, bags,... Every comeback is every time SNSD creates a fever for young people, the group's song destroys all charts, big and small, grabbing the trophy of "hand fatigue" on music shows in Korea.
The most shocking scandals of SNSD's career
Throughout their career, the group has left many achievements and records worthy of legends. However, their success was also accompanied by many controversies and incidents.
In 2008, they were honored to be invited to perform at Dream Concert for the first time. This musical night was very grand and vibrant in the enthusiastic cheers from the fans. However, when the 9 girls stepped onto the stage, in addition to the SONE community (SNSD's fandom), all fandoms agreed to turn off the lightstick, making the space dark and terrifyingly silent.
This is called the "black ocean" - it is the horrible treatment that the audience gives the stars on stage. It was reported that two fan communities of TVXQ and SUPER JUNIOR, because they were not satisfied with SNSD, joined forces to organize a group boycott. Although it later became very successful, this was always a "black streak" for SNSD and of course no artist wanted to receive this.
In 2011, Sooyoung was involved in a car accident while traveling from Seoul to Cheonan, Chungnam to participate in a volunteer activity. As a result, the female idol broke her hip and had to suspend promotions with SNSD for a while to receive treatment. Fortunately, Sooyoung has fully recovered from this injury.
Also in 2011, when SNSD was performing Run Devil Run on a stage, suddenly a strange man appeared. This person approached Taeyeon, took her hand and tried to get her out of the area. The leader of SNSD was extremely panicked and tried to resist, but no security staff was present to intervene. Instead, Sunny and the MCs promptly rushed to stop this guy. The incident scared Taeyeon but she still managed to finish the performance.
In addition, 2015 was also a difficult time for Taeyeon when she was entangled in many discords and conflicts. During a performance, Taeyeon fell into a 2 meter deep hole while moving on stage and disappeared from the fans' view. Fortunately, Taeyeon did not suffer any serious injuries and received medical treatment immediately.
At the end of 2012, QQ news site suddenly published information saying that YoonA had a romantic relationship with PSY. This page pointed out that because they often appear at the same event, PSY and YoonA have developed feelings. Up to the time of posting, the couple is said to have been dating for a while. Moreover, PSY's wife knows this but is still patient to maintain family happiness. Besides, this newspaper also published a photo of two stars walking together at a market.
However, fans have affirmed that it is the image when YoonA joined "Running Man" and the dating story seems to be just a fabricated incident.
In September 2014, the whole Kpop was shocked by the news that member Jessica announced her departure from the group. The incident made SONE (SNSD's fandom) extremely heartbroken and disappointed, SNSD is at its peak facing the brink of disbandment.
Jessica left the group, although it was very painful, but the SNSD members continued to work and work hard to release quality music products. Hit songs like "Lion Heart", "Party", "All Night", "Holiday" have partly affirmed their level of the wall in the hearts of fans.
In 2017, after the end of the contract, members Tiffany, Seohyun, Sooyoung decided to leave the company. SNSD at that time operated under the new name Oh!GG - a subgroup with the remaining 5 members Taeyeon, Sunny, Yuri, Hyoyeon, and Yoona.
Although SNSD is no longer intact with 9 pieces like it was at its peak, each member of the group is now extremely successful on the path they have chosen. Jessica works in fashion, Taeyeon, Yuri, Hyoyeon, Tiffany work as solo singers, Yoona, Seohyun, Sooyoung, Sunny participate in filming and many promotional activities.
