Shakira was accused of evading taxes of $15 million, immediately spoke out to clarify

According to Us Weekly, Shakira agreed to pay a fine of $7.5 million to avoid jail time. However, sharing with the media, the famous singer denied all wrongdoing and accused the Spanish authorities of trying to target her.

The music star said that she accepted to pay the fine to protect the interests of her two sons, Milan and Sasha. "I want to explain the reason calmly and at the right time. I do this to protect my two children and move on with my own life. It's not because of cowardice or sin," the 47-year-old singer told Spain's El Mundo newspaper on September 5.

Previously, the Colombian singer was accused by the Spanish government of evading taxes of more than $15 million from 2010 to 2014. Initially, the recommended sentence for the singer was 8 years in prison and a fine of 26 million USD. However, after the settlement, Shakira paid a smaller fine of $7.5 million.

Prosecutors allege that the famous singer claimed to live in the Bahamas while still residing in Catalonia (Spain). At that time, Shakira was still living with her ex-partner, soccer player Gerard Piqué. Shakira and Gerard Piqué have two sons together, Milan (11 years old) and Sasha (9 years old).

Shakira accused the Spanish government of inaccurate information: "In 2011, I came to Spain because I wanted my relationship with Gerard Piqué to develop. However, when I came here, I always had trouble. I can't be near my company. Anytime I go back to Spain, I make it clear for the reason of building a relationship, not traveling."

The beautiful singer further explained that at that time, she was only in Spain for 73 days, while the minimum number of days to pay taxes was 183. When she officially moved to Spain in 2015, Shakira said that she was charged 10 years' worth of taxes by the tax authorities.

Shakira added that her financial activities are investigated and clarified by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The singer was very frustrated and affirmed that the Spanish government's conviction of tax evasion was a "childish" act. "The truth is completely different. I always fulfill my obligations," she declared.
