Thanh Hoang was born into a poor family with many brothers in Bac Lieu. The difficult family situation caused Thanh Hoang to drop out of school at the age of 9. However, the passion for art still flows in the blood. He had a burning intention and passed the entrance exam to the School of Dramatic Arts 2 (now Ho Chi Minh City College of Theater and Cinema). The road to Thanh Hoang's dream career as an actor was gentle, but not so easy.

The fate that brought him to art was also very coincidental. During a hired job, dredging the sewer pipe of the Theater and Cinema School in Ho Chi Minh City. In Ho Chi Minh City, Thanh Hoang was invited by a friend to take the test. Unexpectedly, the opponent failed and the actor passed.

After graduating, he worked at the Cultural Center of Phu Nhuan District. Active in the movement, Thanh Hoang also studied acting, wrote scripts, and staged and organized performances. From the 1990s, he began to practice writing long screenplays. The actor came up with the idea of writing about old people who come to America to live with their children and grandchildren but become lonely because of cultural differences, painfully nostalgia for their homeland.

Looking for a Southern material, which is cai luong, Thanh Hoang decided to use the song "Da Co Hoai Lang" to guide the emotions of the play.

At the end of 1994, the play Da Co Hoai Lang was first performed on the small stage 5B Vo Van Tan. The play was directed by Cong Ninh.

The play with only four actors has become a phenomenon of the theater village with long lines to go to the theater every screening. Every day, three performances are still not enough to sell tickets to the audience. The play has been performed in Hanoi and the US.

Over the past 20 years, Da Co Hoai Lang has had more than 1,000 performances and won many medals at stages nationwide. In 2017, the play was brought to the big screen by director Nguyen Quang Dung with the performances of Hoai Linh and Chi Tai.

In addition to being an actor, the late artist used to hold the position of director of 5B Theater from 2010-2015. Thanh Loc shared, he knew artist Thanh Hoang since he was a painter who was passionate about art until he became a famous actor and author. The two have bonded and accompanied each other in concerts many times.

"Hoang's passing like this is too early. I think of Hoang's two children and their filial piety, but they are still too young, not old enough to carry the family with their mother.

I feel sorry for the woman who has always stood behind him for many years so that he can focus on making art, now she has to take care of everything for her husband," he said.

The late wife of the artist said that before leaving, her husband advised to repair the house, send her children to study abroad and not cry at the funeral. "He said that if I lie down tomorrow, you and the baby can't cry. He also told his eldest son to take good care of him when his younger brother comes to study with him. That's my husband's biggest wish" - wife Thanh Hoang said.

The eldest son Thanh Hoang studied abroad in the US, so he could not see his father's face for the last time. At that time, he boarded an early flight back to Vietnam to mourn. As soon as he met his mother and brother, the eldest son of the late artist burst into tears, making everyone's eyes teary.
