To help his mother support his family, he worked as a hired shoemaker in Trang Tien Street. While making shoes, Tran Hanh participated in drama activities at the Youth Club (of the Hanoi Youth Union). In the club there are many friends who later became famous names in the Vietnamese theater industry such as: DD Doan Hoang Giang, People's Artist Trong Khoi, People's Artist Doan Dung. Later, he joined the Hanoi Drama Troupe, accepting a life of struggle with a few dozen salaries per month.

His life was full of hardships. After many years of taking care of his wife, who was bedridden, until she died, in old age, Tran Hanh had to take care of his 40-year-old son who suffered a brain injury due to an accident. However, he did not consider himself unhappy. He lived a simple life, did not ask for too much, satisfied with what he received.

When he was still healthy, he often went to his daughter-in-law's clothing store at Hanoi railway station, helping his son sell goods. The image of the austere old man on film and simple in real life became familiar to many audiences. Every time a guest recognized his face, he denied it, saying: "I'm not Tran Hanh". The greatest happiness in Tran Hanh's life is acting. He once said: "Giving gold is not as good as having a role". He never put too much emphasis on remuneration.

As a native of Hanoi, imbued with the pomp of an old town boy, Tran Hanh entered the public's heart with his ascetic, pitiful roles, gentle and simple peasant roles.
