The presence of artist Dieu Hien at Phuong Lien's celebratory party brought tears to everyone's eyes. At the age of 82, despite having difficulty walking and needing a wheelchair, Dieu Hien still made the effort to meet her old friend.
Recently, the son of People's Artist Le Thuy, Duong Dinh Tri, shared a clip recording a warm and touching reunion of artist Phuong Lien with friends, colleagues, and fans after many years living in the US. The event quickly garnered public attention thanks to the heartwarming moments of camaraderie between generations of Cai Luong artists.
It has been eight years since artist Phuong Lien last returned to Vietnam. In her twilight years, with her health not what it used to be, she herself is unsure if she will have another chance to return to her homeland. Therefore, People's Artist Le Thuy and her son organized an intimate party as a welcome and also as an opportunity for artist Phuong Lien to reunite with her colleagues and the audience who have loved her for decades.
The party brought together many famous Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera) artists from the past, such as People's Artist Ngoc Giau, People's Artist Thanh Dien, and artist Kieu Mai Ly... Each person came not only to congratulate Phuong Lien on her return, but also to reminisce about the golden age of Cai Luong on the stage. The atmosphere of the gathering was therefore imbued with nostalgia, where laughter, tears, and old stories intertwined.
Among the guests, the appearance of artist Dieu Hien moved many deeply. At 82 years old, her health is failing, and she has great difficulty walking, having to use a wheelchair and needing assistance with each step. Unable to stand for long periods, she sits even when appearing before people. However, overcoming all the obstacles of age and physical limitations, artist Dieu Hien insisted on attending the party to reunite with her close friend.
In front of her colleagues and audience, artist Dieu Hien tearfully shared: "I'm 82 years old, but I still had to drag myself here. Hearing that Phuong Lien was returning to Vietnam, I was so excited." She recounted a past memory from when she performed in America, when Phuong Lien was the one who took her home and let her stay. At that time, Phuong Lien's husband was still alive and personally cooked meals for her. "I remember this kindness from Phuong Lien," Dieu Hien said emotionally.
Because of that deep affection, when she heard that Phuong Lien had returned, the artist, despite being in a wheelchair, was determined to come and meet her. "I'm actually in a wheelchair, but I still tried to push it here to meet Phuong Lien," she added. Those simple yet sincere words moved many of those present at the party to silence.
Artist Dieu Hien also mentioned the close relationship between the older generation of Cai Luong artists. She said: "In our generation of Cai Luong artists, Sister Ut Bach Lan was the oldest, I called her 'Sister Two'. Now that Sister Two has passed away, I am 'Sister Two and a Half'. I am older than Phuong Lien, so we maintain a sisterly bond." Although her strength was failing, "out of breath and energy," as she put it, Dieu Hien still tried to sing a few lines of traditional Vietnamese folk songs as a gift to Phuong Lien, the audience, and her fellow artists.
The moment the 82-year-old artist began to sing, the entire audience fell silent. Despite her advanced age, Dieu Hien's voice was still resonant, strong, and full of energy, embodying the spirit of a renowned martial arts performer on the Cai Luong stage of yesteryear. Many audience members were moved and rushed onto the stage to give her money, expressing their respect and affection for her.
