Lau Pei Yue: Miss Hong Kong 2013 runner-up, talented but not appreciated by TVB

Liu Bei Yue became more well-known after coming in third place at a major beauty pageant in her home country. Despite her good acting skills, she was not appreciated by TVB - her management company.

Moon Lau Pui-yuet (born 9 September 1989) is a Hong Kong actress under Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB). She was born in Hong Kong and lives in a large family of seven.

Lau Pei-yue's mother, Lam Kieu, was the 15th contestant in the 1985 Miss Hong Kong pageant. Lau Pei-yue attended Lui Ming Choi Baptist Secondary School in the Sha Tin district of Hong Kong. In 2011, she graduated from Hong Kong Baptist University with a Bachelor of Social Science in Communication (Honours), majoring in Film and Media Arts.

During her college years, Liu Beiyue tried her hand at modeling, signing a contract with the management company Jacso Entertainment for two years. After graduating from college, she worked as a flight attendant for two years and then as a project manager.

In May 2013, Lau Pei-yue signed up to compete in the Miss Hong Kong pageant. She was contestant number 6 and the tallest of all the contestants. The final list of 20 contestants was announced at a press conference on July 4 of the same year.

The location chosen by Liu Pei Yue for the photo shoot was Taipei, Taiwan, where she was grouped with other contestants Cai Si Bei and Chen Wei Qi. The semi-finals of the competition were held live on August 25, 2013. The question and answer session for the beauty born in 1989 was given by Zheng Yu Ling, the content was about the size of the house she grew up in because she came from a large family of seven.

Lau Pei-yue replied, "I grew up in a well-off family. Our house is about 1,000 square feet." With 29,835 votes, Pei-yue became the fifth contestant out of ten finalists. On September 1, 2013, she was named the second runner-up of the Miss Hong Kong 2013 pageant with a total of 60,000 votes.

After her coronation, Liu Pei Yue hosted a variety show as a newcomer. In 2014, she filmed her first TV series, "Raising the Standard", which aired in early 2015. In mid-to-late 2016, she starred in the critically acclaimed martial arts film "Hero of the Wall". Although she is a newcomer, her attractive figure and outstanding beauty have helped Pei Yue make her own mark.

In the same year, Lau Pei-yue won the TVB Best Newcomer Award at the TVB StarHub Awards and the TVB Most Improved Actress Award at the TVB Star Awards Malaysia. In the drama "Two Steps From Heaven", she won her first Best Supporting Actress nomination at the TVB Anniversary Awards. She then went on to receive her first nomination for Most Improved Actress.

In 2017, Lau Pei Yue's performance in the supernatural drama "The Reluctant Sorcerer" was well received, earning her her first Most Popular Female Character nomination at the TVB Anniversary Awards. In 2018, she took on her first leading female role in the drama "The Boundary of Survival" and won her first Best Actress nomination at the TVB Anniversary Awards.

In April 2018, Liu Pei Yue went to the US with a makeup artist and photographer to take photos for a book about her life experiences and journey to becoming an actress.

On July 7, 2018, the 2013 Miss Hong Kong runner-up officially announced on Instagram that she would release her own multimedia book titled "Smiling My Way Through" on July 18 and it would be introduced at that year's Hong Kong Book Fair.

As this is a self-funded book, only 3,000 copies were printed, some of which were sold online to international fans. With the positive response to her first book, Liu Pei Yue expressed that she would consider writing a second book next year.

Liu Pei Yue was influenced by her grandfather, an author, to read and write books since she was a child. One of Pei Yue's life goals is to publish her own book before she turns 30. After entering the entertainment industry, she focused on acting, but never forgot her childhood dream of becoming an author.

In December 2018, Lau Pei Yue played the female lead in the TV series "The Wife Rescue Council", once again collaborating with Hu Hong Jun. In 2020, Pei Yue continued her role in the second part of "The Reluctant Sorcerer", a film for which she was ranked in the Top 5 nominations for the Most Improved Actress award at the TVB Anniversary Awards.

In 2021, the runner-up received attention for her villainous role in the crime drama "Nghich Thien Ky An". With her role in the drama "Hoan Doi Chan Tuong", she was ranked in the Top 5 nominations for Best Supporting Actress at the TVB Annual Awards. At the 2022 TVB Annual Awards, Lau Pei Yue won the Most Popular TVB Actress in Malaysia.

As the second runner-up of the "Miss Hong Kong 2013" contest, Liu Pei Yue was invited by TVB to sign a contract with Miss Chan Kai Lam and first runner-up Choi Si Bei. While TVB actively promoted the other two girls by putting them in leading roles despite their lack of acting experience, Liu Pei Yue was ignored. She was only given small supporting roles by the station and then gradually moved on to more supporting roles.

While Chan Kai-lin and Cai Si-bei have been constantly complained by the audience about their acting after 3 years in the profession, it is different with Liu Pei-yue. She is praised by the audience for her acting, when they think that because she started from a supporting line, she is not under pressure, and is less scrutinized than her 2 colleagues. Many people also think that TVB should promote Liu Pei-yue, because she has both talent and beauty, and will definitely attract more audiences instead of wasting time on "mobile vases" like Chan Kai-lin and Cai Si-bei.
