Amid the atmosphere of mourning, a photo of the sky above the burning apartment complex suddenly went viral on social media, causing people to debate the origin of this phenomenon.
In the photo, a stream of white light that is both brilliant and soft appears against the background of the dark sky, right above the building in distress. That image quickly became a hot topic of discussion. Many Hong Kongers believe in spirituality, believing that this is a "supernatural light".
Some people said that on December 4, it had been seven days since the fire. The comments with spiritual colors went viral, contributing to creating deep emotions in the community. However, meteorological and photographic experts have come up with a purely scientific explanation.
Accordingly, the light that appears in the image is not a supernatural phenomenon but just moonlight shining through clouds of uneven thickness. When the Moon is partially obscured, thinner areas of cloud will allow light to pass through, forming a longitudinal trail of light, similar to the image that is spreading.
In addition, because photos are taken with a phone in dark conditions, a dim effect often occurs, causing the light to be longer and more diffuse than it actually is. Combined with the gloomy background of the burning building, this light becomes prominent, easily reminiscent of some special symbol. However, experts insist that this is just a normal atmospheric phenomenon.
According to China Daily, as of December 4, the number of victims killed in a horrific fire at a high-rise apartment complex in Hong Kong has risen to 159. This is one of the most serious tragedies to occur in the special zone in many years, causing a strong shock to the people and creating an atmosphere of pain that envelops the whole society. Rescuers say 31 people are still missing, and the search will continue for several more days.
Rescue teams were deployed around the clock to scan every floor, apartment and even the collapsed scaffolding areas around the building. Authorities said access to the scene was difficult due to heavy structural damage. However, they insist that they will make efforts to search until it is certain that there are no more victims trapped.
The images shared after the fire made many people sad. The high-rise buildings were black, the smoke haunted the entire exterior, and the inside were abandoned apartments and burnt furniture. Rescuers persistently weave into small corners to search for survivors or collect the bodies of victims. Many Hong Kong residents said they were still shocked by the scale of the damage caused by the fire.
For now, Hong Kong officials and people are still focusing on overcoming the aftermath of the tragedy. The local government said it is rolling out emergency support packages for those affected, including financial assistance, temporary shelter and psychological counselling services.
In addition, the cause of the fire is being urgently investigated. Authorities said they would announce the conclusions as soon as possible, and at the same time review fire prevention and fighting at old apartment complexes throughout the special zone to avoid a repeat of the tragedy.
