The news of the passing of veteran actor Lee Soon Jae has saddened the Korean public in particular and audiences across Asia in general. His family and the Academy of Arts where he served as director confirmed the sad news, saying that the actor passed away in the hospital, ending a journey of more than seven decades of tireless dedication to the stage and screen of Korea.
In recent years, the actor's health has gradually declined. He has almost withdrawn from artistic activities to focus on treatment. Waiting for Godot was the last play he participated in before officially stopping his life journey - also a quiet end to the stage career that he cherished all his life.
Lee Soon Jae's passing has created a wave of grief on social media. Many actors, directors and audiences have posted farewell messages, calling him "the teacher of all generations" and "the soul of Korean cinema". To the public, he is not only an artist, but also a symbol of perseverance, serious artistic work and kindness.
In more than 60 years of dedication to art, Lee Soon Jae has participated in hundreds of works of many genres: stage, cinema, television. He regularly appears in large and small projects, from drama to sitcom, always leaving his mark with his realistic, simple but profound acting style. Outstanding works associated with his name include Family is Number One, Potato Star, What Parents Don't Tell, Late Blooming Flowers... In particular, the warm and emotional roles of grandfathers and fathers have helped him become the "national grandfather" in the hearts of Asian audiences.
At the end of 2024, at the age of over 90, Lee Soon Jae still made the experts admire when he won the prestigious Daesang award at the KBS Drama Awards for his role in Gaddamn It. This was the first time in his 70-year career that he had touched this noble award. The awards ceremony recorded on December 31, 2024 and broadcast on January 11, 2025 became the last public stage to witness his image.
When he stepped up to the podium to receive the award, with a thin face but still bright and energetic eyes, he emotionally said: "Living long enough, there will be a day like this. I always thought that one day the opportunity would come, so I was always prepared. Today I received this beautiful and precious award. This is not a dedication award. Acting must be judged by the acting itself, not by popularity or external factors."
In that emotional moment, the veteran actor also left a sincere message: "I have been grateful and received a lot of help from the audience throughout my life. Thank you very much." That was also his last gratitude to the public - those who have always followed and loved him for decades.
In addition to his prolific acting career, Lee Soon Jae is also known as a dedicated teacher. He served as an honorary professor at the Department of Acting, Gachon University, regularly meeting with and inspiring students and training many generations of young actors. For his great contributions to the film industry, he was awarded the Geumgwan Order of Cultural Merit, second class, in 2018 â one of the highest honors in the Korean arts industry.
Despite his old age, Lee Soon Jae still maintained a special lucidity. Relatives revealed that even when lying on his sickbed, he still followed the arts, still talked about new plays, about young actors and the things he wanted to do if he had more time.
