Recently, actor Johnny Depp opened a TikTok account following a legal victory over his ex-wife Amber Heard in a widely publicized defamation trial.
The 58-year-old actor has amassed more than 1.6 million followers as of Monday night (local time) on his account. On his biography, Johnny Depp writes "Occasional Thespian". Depp has not followed anyone else or liked any posts on this account.
Depp opened the account days after a Virginia jury awarded him $10 million in a defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard in a 2018 article she wrote for The Washington Post.
In this article, the actress claims to be "the representative of domestic abuse", but does not mention Johnny Depp by name. Depp's legal team said that Heard "staged the story in hopes of generating positive publicity and advancing her career".
Depp was awarded $15 million in punitive damages, which the judge reduced to $10.4 million under the limits of state law regarding punitive damages.
A source told the New York Post on Monday that Depp, who is currently on a musical tour with Jeff Beck, is currently focusing on music and relaxing after the stress brought on by the trial.
Depp is aiming to finally return to his film career and hopes he will be able to continue it in the future.
Depp's joining TikTok comes after he received strong support from users on the platform during the trial period. As announced Monday, the hashtag #JohnnyDepp has had more than 33.5 billion views and #JusticeforJohnnyDepp has 20.2 billion views.
Meanwhile with Amber Heard, a satirical hashtag #AmberTurd has garnered 4.3 billion views, while the phrase #JusticeforAmberHeard has 85.9 million views.
On June 7, Johnny Depp officially uploaded the first video on his TikTok page. The Pirates of the Caribbean star shared a video of fans cheering for him during the trial that took place from April to June to thank them for their unwavering love and support.
He wrote: "We've been everywhere together, we've seen things together. We've walked the same path together, we've done the right things together, all thanks to your support. And now, we will move forward together. With all my respect and love, thank you all."
Shortly after Johnny Depp posted the video, a spokesperson for Amber Heard released a statement on the ET site: "When Johnny Depp says he's moving forward, women's rights are going backwards. Message of the verdict to victims of domestic violence: be afraid to stand up and speak up."
Amber Heard referred to the court's decision on June 1 when a seven-member jury found the actress defamed Johnny Depp in an editorial in The Washington Post titled "I Speak Out Against sexual violence - and in the face of the outrage of our culture. That has to change." Amber lost the lawsuit, had to pay damages to Johnny totaling 10.35 million USD.
Amber once expressed disappointment with the court's ruling. She wrote on Instagram: "My disappointment today is indescribable. I am heartbroken because the mountain of evidence is still not enough to stand up against the power and influence of my ex-husband. I am even more disappointed that this ruling affects other women. It is a step back.It turns the clock back to a time when a woman speaking out could be shamed and humiliated. publicity. It resets the idea that violence against women should be taken seriously."
Amber Heard's lawyer said the Aquaman actress is planning to appeal because she disagrees with the results received. However, the question is where is the funding for this when currently, the actress is not even able to pay the compensation of more than 10 million USD for Johnny Depp.
Jeff Lewis - a lawyer specializing in defamation and appellate cases in Los Angeles (USA) - said that even if Heard appeals, victory is unlikely.
Meanwhile, the actor has returned to the UK to enjoy the fun with friends and family. He threw a party at a restaurant in Birmingham on the evening of June 6 to celebrate with about 20 close friends. He also emotionally wrote on his personal page after the lawsuit: "The jury gave me my life back. I'm really grateful."
