Recently on the morning of May 18, Kpop fans were shocked when Korean media reported that GFriend would disband in the future. According to an exclusive report from Tenasia, GFriend is said to be disbanding soon, the members will go their separate ways as they are unable to renew their contracts with Source Music.
Accordingly, the soon disbandment of GFriend quickly caused a stir among Kpop fans in general and the group's fans in particular. The reason for the disbandment was the inability to agree on a contract extension with the management company, Source Music, which is bigger than Big Hit.
Then, Source Music officially announced that GFRIEND's contract ended on May 22. The company said:
"After careful consideration and positive discussion, GFRIEND and Source Music have agreed to go their separate ways to continue developing. Over the past 6 years, GFRIEND has received boundless love from Kpop fans thanks to the support of K-Pop fans. With diverse concepts, performances and songs, thereby marking a new generation of girl groups and music, we would like to express our sincere thanks to GFRIEND - those who allowed Source Music to accompany them on their journey. this journey".
GFriend debuted in 2015 and developed into one of the top girl groups in Korea thanks to their multitude of concept styles and skills. GFriend has also attracted many fans around the world thanks to their powerful and synchronized choreography. The group's last comeback was in November 2020 with Mago. It was once reported that GFRIEND's contract would end in 2021, but the fact that the 6 members did not choose to renew was a big shock to fans. However, it is not clear if GFRIEND will disband or just leave the company.
Not long ago, online community Idol Issue (Korea) published some documents from Big Hit Entertainment and the two companies they acquired, Source Music and Pledis Entertainment. Some information about the artists' contracts, the number of trainees as well as the future plans of these companies have been revealed, making the online community curious.
Accordingly, the contract of BTS and Big Hit will be valid until 2024, while the operation term of the junior group TXT will last until 2026. SEVENTEEN and NU'EST both expire with Pledis in 2022. 2021 is the time when GFRIEND and Source Music's contracts end.
Previously, it was reported that BTS had renewed a 7-year contract with Big Hit, the new contract took effect from 2020. But according to the above document, the contract period between the two parties will end in 2024.
In addition, the number of trainees of Big Hit, Pledis, and Source Music was also revealed. There may be many more trainees who have not signed an exclusive contract, but the published document only reveals those who have signed and this also does not guarantee that they will debut in the future.
Currently Big Hit has 31 trainees. BELIFT.lab - the company co-founded by CJ&M and Big Hit has 24 trainees, including contestants competing on the survival show I-LAND. Source Music has 28 trainees, while the number of trainees in Pledis is 72.
In addition, the document also announced each company's group debut plan. Big Hit currently has no plans to form a new group until 2022, most likely because TXT is still a rookie. Source Music and Pledis Entertainment may introduce a new group in 2021 like BELIFT.lab - the company that plans to debut trainees of I-LAND.
However, the actual plans of the companies are not necessarily the same as on paper, they can speed up or delay the launch of the "home chicken". However, what was revealed could not help but raise fans' expectations, especially when Big Hit acquired Pledis, Source Music and BELIFT.lab.
