Unbelievably, after only 3 years, 10 million copies have been distributed throughout Vietnam. Some Japanese newspapers also said that Doraemon was a character that any child knew at that time. Shogakukan, who was the publisher who held the copyright of this manga, was quite annoyed at that time, but realized the profit from Vietnam, so he negotiated the copyright.
Four million yen (about 1 billion dong) is the amount that Shogakukan asked Kim Dong to compensate for the number of stories that were previously pirated. Plus 4 million yen for the acquisition of Doraemon copyright in Vietnam. This deal was interested by Fujiko F. Fujio - the "father" of Doraemon and he decided to come to Vietnam at the end of 1996.

Fujio is the first hot name in the mangaka world to visit Vietnam. Therefore, he was warmly welcomed by the Deputy Prime Minister, the children at that time were very excited to meet the author of the national comic book in real life.
After negotiating, Kim Dong Publishing House and Fujiko both agreed to sign a copyright contract with the amount of 8 million yen. However, the author surprised many people when he refused to receive the entire amount. Instead, Fujiko F. Fujio established the Doraemon Education Fund and contributed to it for poor children in Vietnam. By 2017, this charity fund has reached VND 18 billion.
