The Hong Kong entertainment industry has just received sad news when Ngo Bac Quan, who left a deep impression on TVB audiences through many classic supporting roles, passed away at his home on July 2, at the age of 69.
His life was as quiet as his dedication to art.
This information was published by Sohu newspaper on July 15, making many viewers feel heartbroken when they learned that he had fought bravely against the terrible incurable disease during the last 7 years of his life.
According to the organization that raised funds to help Ngo Bac Quan, the funeral was held privately, in accordance with the actor's wishes during his lifetime. The organization's representative shared: "He once said he didn't want to bother anyone, so he waited until everything was done before announcing it to everyone. Thank you for your companionship, care and encouragement over the past time." This partly depicts Ngo Bac Quan's life and career: quietly dedicated but full of impressions.
Ngo Bo-Kun joined TVB in the 1970s, the golden age of Hong Kong television. Although he mainly played supporting roles, his characters always left a special impression on the audience, even if they only appeared in a few scenes or did not have many lines.
Among his memorable roles, Ngo Bac Quan especially stands out as Phong Ba Ac - one of Murong Phuc's trusted bodyguards, in the classic martial arts film "Thien Long Bat Bo". With his thick beard, fierce eyes and imposing demeanor, he contributed to creating a typical villainous image, loyal but sometimes stubborn, that the audience remembers by name.
In addition, Ngo Bac Quan also had an impressive performance in "The Deer and the Cauldron" when playing a master of the Kim Dinh sect, called "big brother" by Vi Tieu Bao. Although not the main role, his characters really created depth and soul for the films, helping the audience have a more comprehensive view of Kim Dung's martial arts world.
Career change and 7 years of fighting illness
However, Ngo's acting career suddenly took a turn when the Asian financial crisis hit in 1997. The wave of economic crisis forced TVB to cut staff on a large scale to cope with the difficult situation. At the age of 40, when many other actors were still at their peak or had new directions, he was among the artists who were fired.
After losing his "home" TVB, Ngo Bac Quan's life became extremely difficult. He had to struggle with many jobs to make a living, from being a factory worker, a driver, to a street vendor. However, none of the jobs lasted long due to health conditions and age. His life fell into a state of uncertainty and deprivation, far from the image of an artist on screen.
Around 2018, tragedy struck Ngo Bo Quan again. He suddenly became paralyzed on one side of his body and had to be hospitalized. Doctors diagnosed the veteran actor with the incurable disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. This is a progressive disease that attacks the nerve cells that control voluntary muscles, leading to muscle weakness, muscle atrophy, and eventually loss of mobility and breathing.
Wu Bojun's illness progressed rapidly, leaving him unable to walk, bedridden and completely dependent on the care of others. Due to the high cost of treatment, especially special medications and medical care in Hong Kong, while the actor had almost no savings left, he was forced to rely on the help of friends and colleagues.
News of Ngo's condition has touched many artists and audiences. A crowdfunding campaign was then launched to help him. Big names in the Hong Kong entertainment industry such as "boss" Louis Koo, "TVB King" Wayne Lai, Mak Cheung Ching, Siu Ka Yen and many other actors did not hesitate to donate and provide financial support to him in his final years.
The kindness of his colleagues has somewhat eased the pain of illness and the financial burden on Ngo Bac Quan, helping him have better living conditions and treatment in the last days of his life. His passing has left great regret in the hearts of those who love Hong Kong cinema and the silent roles to which he devoted himself.
