The consequences of rapper Diddy's unacceptable behavior have officially been revealed. With the horrific crimes he committed, this prison sentence is considered the burial ground of his entire career, officially gone.
According to the 14-page indictment released, Diddy allegedly created âa criminal enterprise whose members and associates engaged in racketeering, labor racketeering, bribery, and obstruction of justice.â The alleged misconduct began in the early 2000s, according to the documents.
A press release from the U.S. Department of Justice detailed each of Diddy's criminal charges and the prison sentences he could face if convicted of each. The hip-hop mogul was charged with conspiracy to commit racketeering, which carries a life sentence; trafficking in a sex offense, by fraud or coercion, which carries a life sentence and a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years; and engaging in dishonest labor practices, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years. Overall, if convicted on all charges, Diddy could face a minimum of 15 years in prison and a maximum of life in prison.
CNN legal analyst and former prosecutor Elie Honig noted that the charge of âtrafficking in sensitive, fraudulent or coercive conductâ is an âextremely serious charge.â Honig said that because this is a federal charge against Diddy, rather than a state charge, the charges âcarry higher penalties, higher potential sentences.â Former New York City prosecutor and criminal defense attorney Paul Callan echoed that sentiment.
"The charges against him are very serious," Callan told Us Weekly in an exclusive interview on September 19. "If convicted, he could spend the rest of his life in prison." However, Callan also shared that while Diddy could theoretically be sentenced to life in prison, that possibility is "very unlikely" because there are no bad cases.
âGiven the seriousness of the charges, a lengthy prison sentence is almost certain if he is convicted. If convicted, a sentence of 10 to 20 years is likely,â he said.
In addition to the criminal charges against the hip-hop mogul, there have been multiple civil lawsuits filed by women accusing Diddy of misconduct. In November 2023, Diddy settled a lawsuit filed by his ex Cassie. Earlier this year, detailed footage from 2016 was leaked online, showing the rapper allegedly sexually assaulting the singer in a hotel room.
There are currently no talks of Diddy entering a plea deal, but Callan said thatâs likely to change. Most defendants facing serious federal charges negotiate a plea deal rather than risk a more severe sentence after trial.
âOf course, a lot will depend on the prosecutorsâ willingness to negotiate. Theyâre dealing with a big case right now and they donât seem to be interested in extending the leniency,â said the veteran lawyer. Diddyâs attorney, Marc Agnifilo, told reporters last week that his client âwill fight hard and with all his might.â
According to Page Six, on September 29, attorney Tony Buzbee of the Buzbee Law Firm shared the news on the firm's IG page that they will be legally representing more than 50 individuals who have sued Diddy and his accomplices. Mr. Tony Buzbee called Diddy's actions "sordid" and expressed hope that the number of victims his firm represents can increase as the investigation progresses. "Our firm has always been at the forefront of the most important cases in America. We are proud to represent this group of brave souls and pray for justice on their behalf," he said.
