From a young age, Chenle was given the opportunity by his family to develop his musical talent through dancing, vocal training, and playing the piano. In 2006, he enrolled in a course at the Shanghai Radio and Television Art School for Children.

Two years later, Zhong Chenle joined the Yingxing Art Troupe and received formal vocal training. From here, he began to become a c.hild singer, having the opportunity to appear on many major music stages.

At the age of 8, Chenle participated in a children's music talent search competition called Yin Yue Xing Ling Qing Yue and won second place. Undaunted, SM continued to contact Chenle's father to convince him and received his consent. He then went to Korea to start his internship at this famous entertainment company in 2016.

At first, the young man had a hard time moving to a completely new environment. Geographical distance and cultural differences were the main reasons why he could not adapt to life in Korea.

In the summer of 2016, Chenle was introduced by SM Entertainment to become the Main Vocalist of NCT DREAM. At first, the male idol faced many difficulties in memorizing choreography and learning Korean.
