Chau Ngoc Quang: The midfielder of Vietnam, happy to play in the AFF Cup

Chau Ngoc Quang is a Vietnamese professional footballer, born on February 1, 1996 in Tam Ky, Quang Nam. He is currently playing as an attacking midfielder and winger for Hoang Anh Gia Lai club in V.League 1 and the Vietnam national team.

Chau Ngoc Quang grew up from the training academy of Hoang Anh Gia Lai, one of the leading football academies in Vietnam. He joined the academy in 2007 and underwent training that lasted nearly a decade before being promoted to the first team in 2016. During this time, he developed his skills and gained experience in competition, preparing for his professional career.

Chau Ngoc Quang made his first match in the V.League on March 4, 2017 when he came on as a substitute in a 0-1 loss to SHB Da Nang. Since then, he has gradually established himself as one of the important players of the team. With good ball control, speed and individual technique, Chau Ngoc Quang has become an indispensable part of Hoang Anh Gia Lai's squad.

In 2016, Chau Ngoc Quang was loaned to Dak Lak club to accumulate more experience in competition. Then, in June 2018, he and his teammate Dinh Thanh Binh were loaned to Viettel club to compete in the second leg of the 2018 National First Division. Here, he had the opportunity to compete regularly and continue to develop his skills.

In the 2021-2022 season, Chau Ngoc Quang was loaned to Hai Phong club. Here, he played 20 matches and scored 1 goal. His presence has helped Hai Phong have a successful season and he has also received many praises from experts.

Chau Ngoc Quang started his international career with the Vietnam U-23 team in 2017. He participated in the 2018 AFC U-23 Championship and won the runner-up position in China with the team. This is one of the most memorable achievements in his career, marking an important turning point in his international career.

In 2022, Chau Ngoc Quang was summoned to the Vietnamese national team for the first time and made his debut in a 2-2 draw with Myanmar at the 2022 AFF Suzuki Cup. He scored his first goal for the national team on January 3, 2023 in a 3–0 win over Myanmar in the 2022 AFF Cup.

At the 2024 AFF Cup, coach Kim Sang Sik chose Ngoc Quang for important matches. Choosing Ngoc Quang from the beginning is considered unreasonable, it is even more unreasonable when this midfielder has to rise high to play with Xuan Son. However, coach Kim Sang Sik was right when choosing Ngoc Quang. It is not difficult to realize, the midfielder born in 1996 is one of the most runs on the field. Ngoc Quang can stand deviated to the right or to the left, sometimes back deep or on the shoulder of Xuan Son to kick the plug. His aggressiveness and desire to assert himself have helped Chau Ngoc Quang become one of the most prominent faces on the field.

"The victory of the whole team is more important than all. Chosen or not, I am always focused and prepared for different situations. For me personally, the match against Singapore at Viet Tri Stadium is the most beautiful memory since wearing the national team jersey until now. The story is not in the goal, the pass, but the first time I was trusted to play the full 90 minutes officially," Chau Ngoc Quang shared.

That's right, wearing the national team shirt and starting all 90 minutes has become a very long journey for Chau Ngoc Quang. Used to be a member of Vietnam U23 in Changzhou in 2018, but Ngoc Quang mainly sat on the bench. It wasn't until 4 years later that Ngoc Quang was first called up to the team by coach Park Hang Seo. Sadly, he got Covid-19 again. For the second time, thanks to a colleague with Covid, he was called as a substitute to prepare for a friendly match against Afghanistan in June 2022. Started and Vietnam won the opponent 2-0, but in the 61st minute, Ngoc Quang was withdrawn to replace Cong Phuong.

It was not until October 2024 that Ngoc Quang was placed in the starting line-up again, when coach Kim Sang Sik's team played a friendly with India. After the training trip in Korea, the future of Ngoc Quang's team is not very bright. Then happiness broke out, Ngoc Quang was selected to participate in the 2024 AFF Cup. Ngoc Quang is making great strides in the national team. After the matches against the Philippines and Singapore, perhaps Ngoc Quang can feel that he himself can rise to the stature of a star if he is chosen and trusted.

Chau Ngoc Quang is known for his smart playing style, good ball control and excellent individual technique. He can play in a variety of positions on the attack, from attacking midfielder to winger. His accurate passing ability and tactical vision have helped him become one of the important players of Hoang Anh Gia Lai and the Vietnamese national team.

Off the field, Chau Ngoc Quang is a very secretive person about his personal life. He rarely shares about his family and private life in the media. However, he is always loved by his teammates and fans because of his sociable, friendly personality and spirit of playing hard.
