Mr. Hien's group bought aluminum to cast and produce motorcycle engines, mechanical processing, painting, finishing, assembling, and testing. The frame was produced from iron pipes purchased from Hoa Phat.
Do Quang Hien was born on October 29, 1962, in Hanoi. He is famous for founding the T&T Hanoi football club. In addition, he also owns 5 other football clubs. That is also the reason for the nickname "Bau Hien" was born.
In 1999, some Chinese partners were looking for partners to produce motorbikes in Vietnam. Mr. Do Quang Hien (Mr. Hien) was introduced. "I had no money, but the partners suggested that I only need to get a license and they would take care of the capital, components and production line" - Mr. Do Quang Hien recounted.
At that time, Mr. Hien had just gone through a great "tribulation". From the "dominant" position in the Vietnamese electronics and refrigeration market, T&T Group fell into difficulties, even owing taxes because it could not compete with the massive influx of smuggled products.
"At that time, I was barely holding on to a stake. In addition to working on a project to get a license, there were times when I had to "eat on credit" and "receive customers on credit" every time I received them," said Mr. Hien. After that, T&T became one of the first businesses to get a license and started assembling motorbikes. Business activities went very well.
With this initial success, a large corporation proposed to cooperate with T&T to jointly invest in building the largest motorcycle engine, component and motorcycle assembly factory in the North, which is the T&T Hung Yen factory with a total investment value at that time of 300 billion VND.
It can be said that T&T Hung Yen factory is one of the first factories to form the motorbike industrial production in Vietnam. At that time, T&T bought aluminum to cast and produce motorbike engines, mechanical processing, painting, finishing, assembling, testing. The frame was produced from iron pipes purchased from Hoa Phat. They also produced the body of the motorbike.
According to information from this Group, T&T motorbikes are supplied to Vietnamese people in all rural areas and cities at a selling price of 16-20 million VND. T&T quickly became the leading domestic motorbike manufacturer in the market share in 2000 with 180,000 motorbikes/year, 3-4 times higher than foreign brands. T&T motorbikes are also exported to Africa.
"At that time, when reporting T&T's production achievements to the Ministry of Industry and Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem, he had to ask a big question: "Who is T&T?" Luckily, when I started building the factory, he attended and later went down to the factory to inspect the production line and said that "private people have proactively invested, built factories, opened production workshops and did not have to wait for the budget anymore". So the value of T&T's contribution here is that it has solved the Government's pain point about the motorbike manufacturing industry" - Chairman of T&T Group Do Quang Hien recounted.
It is known that to achieve the output of 2,000 cars/day to supply the market, the Company had to organize 3 shifts of production 24/24 with more than 2,000 workers. Mr. Do Quang Hien had to eat, live, and sleep with the workers in the workshop and never closed his office door.
But because of its popularity, the shops compete with each other in terms of price. There was a time when a T&T motorbike was sold by a dealer for a profit of 2 million VND, but later on, it was only 50,000 VND. That made the dealers no longer want to sell T&T motorbikes because the profit was not high.
Then, with the addition of changes in technology and mechanisms, the business gradually declined. However, later, the passion for mechanics still made Mr. Do Quang Hien decide to establish T&T Motor in 2011, investing in a production line and assembling 4-wheel motorbikes. The product carries the brand name . T&T Exotic 'trucks' priced at 60-90 million VND, T&T Fushida 3-wheel vehicles... are also bought by many people to transport small goods in rural areas.
Returning to Mr. Hien's farewell to the motorbike industry, after earning a lot of money from this field, around 2005, Mr. Hien was introduced to invest in some rural banks in the West, in which Nhon Ai Bank in Can Tho created sympathy with the 'boss' because the name "Nhon Ai" means Nhan Ai, which also resonates with the word "Tam" in the name of T&T. It is known that Mr. Hien did not bargain, closed the deal with the former Chairman of this bank and transferred all the money to the next day, starting a new journey with SHB Commercial Joint Stock Bank.
