Few people know that Au Duong Phan Cuong - the most classic "Jia Bao Ngoc" in Chinese cinema - once accepted "under the knife" to fit his role and was faithful to one woman his whole life.
"Dream of the Red Chamber" is one of the classic Chinese television series. This 1987 work was adapted from the novel of the same name by writer Cao Tuyet Can and was loved by a large audience, including Vietnamese audiences.
The success of this film has helped a series of actors become bright stars and have brilliant careers such as Au Duong Phan Cuong (as Jia Bao Ngoc), Tran Hieu Huc (as Lam Dai Ngoc), Ma Quang Nho (as Jia Thuy)...
After more than 30 years, the fate of the famous actor in "Dream of the Red Chamber" has changed. According to QQ, 11 actors in "Dream of the Red Chamber" passed away, leaving their colleagues and many audiences in mourning. While a series of colleagues of the same generation such as Tran Hieu Huc, Ma Quang Nho, Duong Tuan Dung, Ma Gia Ky... passed away, Au Duong Phan Cuong had a luckier ending.
Surgery to play the role of Jia Bao Ngoc
Going back in time, in the mid-1980s when the project to adapt "Dream of the Red Chamber" was first sparked, Au Duong Phan Cuong was chosen to play the role of Jia Bao Ngoc, becoming the last person to join the film crew.
At that time, finding the actor to play Jia Bao Ngoc was a "headache" for the "Dream of the Red Chamber" crew. Because according to the original, this character is a young man with a milky face. It is difficult to find any actor with a similar appearance. In fact, during rehearsals, this role was played by two female actors, like in previous versions of "Hong Lau Mong".
When the search was almost at a standstill, an actor suggested Au Duong Phan Cuong to director Vuong Phu Lam. At that time, the actor born in 1963 was still struggling to make a living from acting because his appearance was "too old for a child role, and too young for an adult role". Unintentionally, that defect became a "tailor-made" for the role of Jia Bao Ngoc.
Appropriate appearance, along with solid acting, Au Duong Phan Cuong excellently transformed into the role of Lam Dai Ngoc's "young childhood friend", creating a great reputation at that time. Up to now, everyone agrees that Ouyang Fenqiang's Jia Baoyu is one of the most classic roles in Chinese cinema, on par with Luc Tieu Linh Dong's role as Sun Wukong.
After "Hong Lau Mong" in 1987, from being an unknown pawn, the actor named Au Duong gradually became a star, loved by the audience, sought after by the media and became the preferred name of many domestic directors. He was also invited to act in commercials and teach acting at art schools...
Few people know that to achieve that success, Au Duong Phan Cuong had to sacrifice a lot, even accepting physical harm. In a 2013 conversation, he revealed a secret kept hidden for 30 years.
According to the actor, when he received the role of Jia Bao Ngoc from director Vuong Phu Lam, a studio assistant advised him to get his chin fixed because it was quite short and didn't look good in pictures.
Phan Cuong hesitated and thought for a long time before deciding to see a doctor. Luckily, going under the knife gave him a longer, more visible chin. He considered himself lucky, because with the medical level of the past, cosmetic surgery could be successful and left no sequelae until now.
Unfortunately, being in a trance with "Jia Bao Ngoc" left Au Duong Phan Cuong trapped in his own shadow. Although he received many movie invitations after "Dream of the Red Chamber", none of his roles really left an impression.
Finally, he decided to turn to directing, and made a certain mark. From 1989 until now, Au Duong Phan Cuong has "helmed" more than 50 works, both television and film, including "Sunset", "Because there is no wind", "Hidden love", " My mother is in Tibet", "Love in the rainy season"...
The pain of losing a son
Au Duong Phan Cuong met his gentle wife Khang Le while filming a movie together. At that time, he only played a supporting role, while Khang Le played the main role.
He once shared the secret to flirting with his beautiful partner: "At that time, I was still immature and had never been in love before, so I only knew how to follow books to pursue her. Every day, I read books, Then I met her and shared my feelings and thoughts. At first, Khang Le did not have sympathy for me, but then, because I was too stubborn, she was also moved."
After being in love for a while, Au Duong Phan Cuong received an invitation to participate in the movie Dream of the Red Chamber. The couple had to have a long-distance relationship for 3 years before moving into the same house.
In 1992, Au Duong Phan Cuong and his wife happily welcomed the birth of their first son. However, just a month later, the little angel left them due to pneumonia. "My son just died right in my arms. I was so hurt" - many years later, the actor still choked up when recalling his son's passing.
Four years later, Au Duong Phan Cuong and his wife enjoyed the happiness of being parents again when their daughter Au Duong Van Ham was born.
Not only beautiful, Au Duong Van Ham also inherited her parents' acting talent. At the age of 16, she was cast in a short film. Recently, Au Duong Van Ham graduated from the Central Academy of Drama.
Entering his twilight years, Au Duong Phan Cuong has a peaceful life with his wife and daughter. He is no longer as active in art as before, instead spending time taking his wife to travel and enjoy life.
