After two years at Vassar College in New York, he dropped out to enroll at the Culinary Institute of America and graduated in 1987. Bourdain spent several years working in restaurants in the northeast of the United States, before becoming a Chef of Brasseries Les Halles restaurant in Manhattan in 1998.
