Angelina Jolie rescues relatives, acts in time amid US forest fire

On January 10, Angelina and her 16-year-old son went to a grocery store near their home in Los Feliz, California, to buy water and other necessities. They loaded many items into the trunk of their car and drove back to their $25 million mansion.

Speaking to Dailymail, the 49-year-old actress expressed her concerns about the bushfires and said she was helping people evacuate to her home. When asked if she would donate to the relief efforts, she replied: "I will, but right now I am looking after my loved ones and welcoming them into my home."

The Los Feliz neighborhood where Angelina Jolie lives with her six children was not affected by the devastating fire. She bought the mansion a few years ago, after her split from actor Brad Pitt.

The Los Angeles wildfires began Tuesday, January 7, in Pacific Palisades and spread to neighboring areas due to strong winds. As of January 10, five major fires were burning across Los Angeles, scorching nearly 30,000 acres and destroying more than 10,000 structures, according to Page Six. More than 100,000 residents were evacuated and at least 10 people died. Officials said firefighters “hope to make significant containment” of the fires by Saturday.

Many celebrities have donated money, supplies or directly helped people in need. Oscar-winning actress Jamie Lee Curtis said she and her husband donated $1 million to help victims of the disaster. Kylie Jenner, Mark Zuckerberg, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have also donated to local relief organizations.

On Friday, actress Jennie Garner joined relief efforts to help provide meals to firefighters and victims. Stars Halle Berry, Sharon Stone, Michelle Pfeiffer and others also donated clothes to those who lost their homes.

US President Joe Biden has described the wildfires as the most destructive and fastest-moving in California history. Analysts are still assessing the financial impact of the disaster, with several organizations raising their estimates of the damage caused by the fires.

JP Morgan doubled its forecast for insured losses to $20 billion, while Wells Fargo gave a similar figure, warning that the total economic cost of the disaster could exceed $60 billion.

Investment bank Raymond James forecast insured losses of between $11 billion and $17.5 billion, saying the disaster could be the most expensive wildfire in U.S. history. Analysts at credit rating firm Morningstar DBRS maintained their forecast of insured losses of more than $8 billion.

Private weather forecaster AccuWeather even estimates economic losses of $135-150 billion, signaling a difficult recovery and skyrocketing homeowner insurance premiums.

"It will take weeks or months to determine the extent of insured losses. However, the Los Angeles wildfires could be among the most expensive in California history," said Moody's Ratings.

Pacific Palisades is one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the United States, home to many Hollywood A-listers and multimillion-dollar mansions. After this week's fire, insurance premiums there could skyrocket.

"Although the leading real estate insurance companies in the US have a good financial foundation, the real estate insurance market in California has faced many challenges in recent times. This has caused many leading real estate companies to rethink their insurance products, even withdraw from the market completely," Morningstar DBRS emphasized in the report.

According to Mr. Aris Papadopoulos, founder of the Resilience Action Fund (RAF), rebuilding areas affected by bushfires can take 5-10 years.
