During the six weeks of the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard defamation trial, fans went from one surprise to another. Especially in the last days, the actor Pirates of the Caribbean had a spectacular counterattack.
In mid-April 2022, the lawsuit between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard officially started and attracted the attention of world public opinion. The lawsuit focuses on a 2018 Washington Post article by Amber Heard.
Johnny Depp sued his ex-wife for defamation even though the article did not mention the actor's name. The actor "Pirates of the Caribbean" demanded $ 50 million in compensation because he thought that the article caused his career to go downhill.
The 36-year-old actress denied lying and accused her ex-husband of being an abusive, addicted person. Amber Heard accused Depp of organizing campaigns that caused her to lose her film and advertising contracts, and lose $50 million.
Opening with a series of shocking details
In the first week, lawyer Rottenborn - Amber Heard's legal representative - told the court that the actress was abused by her ex-husband in many forms, both physically, verbally, behaviorally and psychologically. Notably, Rottenborn emphasized that Heard was sexually assaulted by Johnny Depp during their marriage.
"Amber Heard has suffered from Depp's sexual assault for many years. People will hear the most horrific words about the violence she went through. Heard will stand up and tell it all. ' said Amber Heard's attorney.
However, Depp's side denied the statements from Rottenborn's lawyer.
The actor said that he had never committed violence against anyone, especially women. Depp said that Heard's side created a bogus script to smear him.
In defense of Depp, bodyguard Sean Bett also testified in court. Here, he told many times that he witnessed the controversial star couple and the actor being assaulted by Heard. Doctor David Kipper also defended Depp and shared that he had never seen him beat his wife while working for both.
Johnny Depp "turned the tide", gaining the advantage?
In subsequent trials, the actor born in 1963 was defended by many witnesses. The case turned in Depp's favor.
At a hearing on April 27, Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officer Melissa Saenz - who went to the penthouse to settle the controversy between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard in May 2016 - asserted that she did not saw evidence of domestic abuse from Johnny Depp.
Melissa Saenz emphasized that the mark on Amber Heard's face was not due to assault. It's a sign of crying or putting on makeup.
Another important Depp witness, psychologist Dr. Shannon Curry, diagnosed Heard with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and dramatic personality disorder (HPD).
Notably, Johnny Depp first described the incident where Heard threw a bottle of wine leading to severed finger tips in 2015.
Heard's legal team then countered Depp's testimony by releasing audio files, which contained many rude and indecent insults that the actor had for Heard.
He called his ex-wife a dirty whore", "fat" when texting with his best friend, and the Pirates of the Caribbean star also threatened to kill and burn Heard.
How did Amber Heard respond to her ex-husband?
In the next 3 weeks, the Aquaman star attacked her ex-husband for many hours in a row. She said the actor's habit of violence, jealousy, drug abuse, and alcohol addiction was the cause of their marriage.
According to Heard, between 2013 and 2015, their life was full of turbulence with arguments and tension. In 2013, when she saw a photo taken between her and another actor, Depp got angry and hit his wife.
Heard said she was slapped in the face by her ex-husband, causing blood to splash on the wall. Another time, Johnny Depp accused his wife of flirting with another woman. He cursed, grabbed Heard by the hair and assaulted Heard. Not stopping there, Depp ripped off his wife's skirt and underwear to search for drugs.
Heard highlighted her toxic marriage to Depp and the ensuing troubles that engulfed her entire career. After earning $1 million from Aquaman in 2018, Heard went on to sign a $2 million contract for the sequel.
However, many of her scenes in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom were cut due to the effects of the lawsuit between Heard and Depp.
Heard's line of witnesses including sister Whitney Henriquez, close friend, iO producer Tillett Wright, Bruce Witkin, Pennington, actress Ellen Barkin also testified for her. They accused Depp of being an addict, hot-tempered, easily jealous and abusive to his ex-wife.
Johnny Depp delivers a fatal blow that hurts Amber Heard
Later, the actor born in 1963 won sympathy from the public. Outside the court, thousands of people wore rain, sunshine, banners and flowers to support Depp. On social networking platforms, the number of his fans increased exponentially.
In the final trial, Depp's legal team invited witnesses including DC Films President Walter Hamada, supermodel Kate Moss, intellectual property damage assessor Doug Bania... Partial Kate Moss's testimony is most remarkable. The British supermodel vindicated Depp and denied the information that she was abused by her ex-lover as Amber Heard had said before.
President Walter Hamada said that he considered replacing the actor playing Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom because Amber Heard's weak acting, poor interaction with the male lead Jason Momoa. Depp and Heard's lawsuit is in fact not the reason why Heard can lose his role in the superhero blockbuster.
In court, Depp also asserted that all of Heard's statements were false. He said: "It was horrible, absurd, humiliating, painful. It felt horrible and cruel. It was all wrong."
However, Heard's side said that the Aquaman actor had no reason to make up a story about domestic violence.
The 36-year-old star also spoke for the first time about being attacked by Depp's fans on social networking platforms. She said: "People want to kill me. They even want to bake my baby in the microwave. They say those barbaric things to me every day. I get hundreds of death threats from Depp's fans. People mocked my testimony about being assaulted."
After 6 weeks of litigation, the trial ended on May 27, but there was no final decision. The jury will announce the results at the next hearing on May 31.
