Chu Thanh Huyen and her husband Quang Hai received special attention from the public thanks to their beautiful love story. Taking advantage of the popularity, Chu Thanh Huyen expanded her business but continuously encountered major changes.
In March, Chu Thanh Huyen faced a wave of criticism from the online community when she was accused of "using her son to advertise" a type of milk that was not suitable for the baby's age. After apologizing for the misleading advertisement, Quang Hai's wife continued to be accused of selling a type of cosmetic product originating from Korea but without a Vietnamese sub-label, not issuing sales invoices and showing signs of tax evasion. These controversies have seriously affected the WAGs' image in the public eye.
However, despite the public opinion storm, Chu Thanh Huyen still maintains a regular livestream schedule to sell products on her fanpage with 4.8 million followers. Not only that, this fanpage also continuously appears many posts about warehouse clearance, product promotions... Notably, netizens also unanimously spoke up that Chu Thanh Huyen is still using many advertising words that are considered excessive, exaggerating the effects of some beauty products, making consumers easily deceived.
"Stem cells" and "looking ten years younger": When cosmetics become miracle drugs?
Typical of Chu Thanh Huyen's controversial advertising words is a post on the homepage on June 24. This post announced a clearance sale, buy 1 get 1 free stem cell sunscreen, with the introduction "super smooth and beautiful". Although the form of buy 1 get 1 free is still legal when it does not exceed 50% of the value of the promotional goods, the phrase "stem cell sunscreen" is what attracts the most attention and raises questions about exaggerating the product's uses.
In recent years, stem cell treatment has brought many advances in the medical field. Stem cells have the ability to regenerate and produce new cells, so many beauty salons, clinics, and even online beauty product sellers "take advantage" of the phrase "stem cells" for advertising. However, blatant advertising without scientific verification can cause consequences or unnecessary costs for consumers when the effectiveness is unclear or even unreal.
In addition, in other product advertising posts, Chu Thanh Huyen's homepage also frequently mentions phrases that are considered misleading and exaggerate the effects such as: "look ten years younger", "clear changes after a few uses", "apply to where it's applied, it's plump", etc. These words can make consumers feel like the cosmetics have the ability to treat or bring about "miraculous" effects that go beyond their actual uses.
Ministry of Health tightens regulations: What miracle can be done for "excessive" advertisements?
The situation of "excessive" advertising like Chu Thanh Huyen's is being tightened by the Ministry of Health. The new draft Decree strictly prohibits a series of behaviors and phrases that exaggerate the effects of cosmetics and attribute disease treatment features. Phrases such as "stem cells", "hair growth stimulation", "weight loss", "rejuvenation" are all on the list of prohibited words to avoid misunderstandings. Cosmetic advertisements are required to have clear information about the product, uses, manufacturer and warnings. However, many individuals/brands still ignore this, turning cosmetics into "miracle drugs", putting consumers at risk of health.
Warning bell from KOLs/KOCs: don't trade your reputation for "fake" advertising!
Not only Chu Thanh Huyen, recently, the incidents of KOL/KOC livestreaming to sell products and advertising exaggerated effects are increasing and receiving special attention from the online community. Because many people have received severe penalties for excessive advertising, typically Quang Linh Vlogs, Hang Du Muc were prosecuted and temporarily detained on charges of deceiving customers after advertising KERA vegetable candy with misleading words such as: "1 candy is equivalent to 1 plate of vegetables".
These incidents are a strong warning bell for individuals and organizations operating in the business and advertising sector. The pursuit of profit while ignoring transparency, honesty and compliance with the law not only causes damage to consumers but also damages the reputation of the advertisers themselves, even leading to serious legal consequences. The public is waiting for more drastic intervention from the authorities to restore order in the field of online advertising.
