The Chinese entertainment industry has just received sad news when veteran director Hoang Thai Lai, the man behind the success of many classic works, passed away on July 16, 2025, at the age of 75.
According to director Tian Kai-man, the cause of his death was laryngeal cancer. Wong Tai-lai's passing caused a stir, leaving deep sorrow in the hearts of many colleagues and Hong Kong cinema fans.
The Consecutive Departures of Hong Kong Cinema Legends
It is worth mentioning that just a month before Wong Tai-lai passed away, the Hong Kong entertainment industry also received another heartbreaking tragedy. Martial arts legend and action director Tang Jia (born in 1937), who contributed to creating many classic action scenes in martial arts films, including versions of "Tathagata Palm" and many works by Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan, also suddenly passed away on June 23 at the age of 88 after an unfortunate accident.
The reason for Duong Giai's passing is believed to be related to the psychological shock of witnessing his wife, veteran actress Tuyet Ni, struggling with pancreatic cancer. Tragedy continued when just 10 days after her husband's death, actress Tuyet Ni also breathed her last on July 3 at the age of 77.
The passing of big names like Tang Kai, Tuyet Ni and now Wong Tai Lai in a short period of time has shocked the Hong Kong film community. This is a reminder of the passing of a golden generation who built a solid foundation for regional cinema.
From TV editor to talented film director
Wong Tai-lai was born in 1950. He began his artistic career in the 1970s, when Hong Kong's film and television industries were booming. From the early 1970s to the early 1980s, he was not only a director but also a talented editor for several major television stations.
In 1980, Hoang Thai Lai officially entered the film directing career. Just two years later, he made a strong impression with the film "Nhu Lai Than Chuong" (The Buddha's Palm - 1982). This film not only became one of the classic works of the fantasy martial arts genre but also helped Hoang Thai Lai's name become known to a wide audience.
Following this success, in 1984, he directed the film "Fate". This was a remarkable romantic film, with the participation of the most famous stars of Hong Kong at that time: "Thien Cuong" Leslie Cheung, "Queen of the Screen" Maggie Cheung and "Diva" Anita Mui Diem Phuong.
Famous for heroic and detective films
Amid the wave of gangster and hero films that swept Hong Kong cinema in the mid- and late 1980s, Wong Tai-lai also made a name for himself. In 1987, he released "A Hero," a dramatic action film starring two top movie stars, Chow Yun-fat and Man Tse-leung.
In 1988, Hoang Thai Lai continued to make success with "Internal Affairs and Law". In the same year 1989, he directed two other outstanding films, "Love Comrades" and "Three Wolves" (The Big Heat).
Despite his old age and illustrious career, Wong Tai-lai has never really retired. He has always maintained his passion for cinema and is constantly involved in new projects. Just last year, the veteran director even took on the role of producer for the film "Tranh Ba", starring martial arts star Leung Siu-long in the lead role. This shows his enthusiasm and unwavering dedication to the film industry until the last years of his life.
Personal life and marriage with Liu Meijun
In her personal life, the most well-known love story of Hoang Thai Lai is her marriage to Luu My Quan. Their relationship began when Luu My Quan had not yet become a famous singer. After graduating from high school, she worked at a film company and met Hoang Thai Lai there.
In 1982, when she was only 18 years old, Lau Meijun made a bold decision to marry a veteran director. This marriage surprised many people because of the age difference and the fact that Lau Meijun was still very young. The couple had a son and a daughter together, building a happy family. However, their marriage only lasted 10 years. The two divorced in 1992, ending a chapter in their lives.
