The latest controversy surrounding BLACKPINK's Rosé's song 'APT.' has erupted in Japan, where plagiarism allegations have surfaced, with some claiming similarities to Miku Sawai's 'Sorry, I Can't Be a Good Child'.
Industry insiders say these similarities are minor and stem from widely used chord progressions, making the allegations seem unfounded.
Critics pointed out that Rosé's chorus of 'APT.' at the 32-second mark bears similarities to the melody of Sawai's song starting at the 41-second mark. While some listeners may notice these similarities, music experts stressed that these chord progressions are common in the industry.
Furthermore, similar chord progressions can also be found in popular songs such as Coldplay's 'Viva La Vida' (2008) and One Direction's 'Night Changes' (2014), as well as tracks by groups such as IVE and Baby Monster.
A source in the Korean music industry told Ten Asia that the main factor in determining plagiarism is whether a song has a unique progression, adding that 'APT.' has its own distinct characteristics in addition to some similarities. They also noted that there are many legal precedents where plagiarism is not recognized due to similarities in genre.
Furthermore, the source suggested that the accusations may stem from jealousy over Rosé's global success, noting that the complaints originated from Japanese online communities. They referred to previous plagiarism accusations against Psy's 'Gangnam Style' during the song's peak, suggesting that this situation could be a continuation of that trend, describing it as an absurd controversy.
Previously, when the online community broke out in a debate about Rosé's new song 'APT.' and Miku Sawai's song 'Sorry, I Can't Be a Good Child', a listener commented: 'Rosé used a problematic melody... However, the important chorus is used so much that it's hard to tell who composed it originally...'.
'When it is difficult to find the original author of a common melody, the correct approach is to sample from pre-existing songs,' the listener continued. 'Using an existing melody cannot be considered composition, and whether it is intentional or not, it qualifies as plagiarism. This Japanese song is just an example for comparison, but it is unlikely that this is the only song with a melody similar to 'APT.'.
This listener then added: 'Luckily, this melody has been around for so long that even people who have used it before probably don't know who originally composed it, so it's unlikely anyone will file a lawsuit against Rosé.'
Recently, Billboard announced that the song "APT." by Rosé (Blackpink) and Bruno Mars debuted at number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 - the weekly chart of the most popular singles in the US. With this achievement, Rosé became the highest-ranking female Kpop artist on the Billboard Hot 100, surpassing Blackpink with the song "Ice Cream" featuring Selena Gomez (ranked 13). At the same time, Rosé is the 5th Kpop artist to enter the Top 10 of this chart, after PSY, BTS, Jimin and Jungkook.
In its first week in the US, "APT." earned 25 million streams, reached 6.4 million radio airplay audiences, and achieved 14,000 song downloads. "APT." set the record for the biggest US streaming week for any K-pop solo artist in Billboard Hot 100 history, surpassing Jungkook and Latto's "Seven" with 21.9 million streams.
Additionally, "APT." debuted at No. 1 on both the Billboard Global 200 and Global Excl. US charts. This is Rosé's second song to top both charts simultaneously, following "On The Ground" (2021). To date, no female K-pop soloist other than Rosé has topped both charts simultaneously, or reached the Top 1 on the Billboard Global 200.
