Natascha Kampusch, born in 1988 in Austria, in a family without complete happiness. Her father only knows how to spend money and her mother is faced with how to make enough money for the family to live, to pay the pounding bills. Sometimes the pressure in life makes her take her anger out on her daughter.
When Natascha was 10 years old, she went to school alone for the first time and was kidnapped that same day. Her mother was always overprotective of her and Natascha wanted to feel independent but unfortunately, she chose the wrong date. Little did she know that that one small decision had kept her locked in a secret cellar for years.
On March 2, 1988, in the city of Vienna, Austria, a man driving a minibus drove up to the girl. Taking advantage of the absence, he rushed out and quickly controlled and forced her into the back of the car. That man was Wolfgang Priklopil, 36 years old, a telecommunications technician. He lived with his parents in Strasshof, half an hour by car from Vienna.
Having carefully prepared the kidnapping plan in advance, Priklopil took the girl into a windowless cellar, more than 1m high, located below the garage of the house where he lived. In it, there is a built-in ventilation fan to supply air to the basement.
During her incarceration, Natascha suffered enough both physically and mentally, chained to her kidnapper while they both slept in his bed, forced to cut her hair and work naked. When Natascha reached her teenage years, things got worse.
Natascha said, she once broke a bone when trot angered Priklopil. In her immature thoughts at that time, Natascha gradually accepted the cruel reality, thinking that she would never be able to escape that basement.
On August 23, 2006, after 3096 days in captivity, Natascha escaped prison at the age of 18 while Priklopil wasn't looking. The police conducted a DNA test and determined that the runaway girl was indeed Natascha Kampusch, who went missing eight years ago. Meanwhile, Priklopil, after learning of Natascha's escape, fled the police in his car to a train station on the outskirts of Vienna. This crazy kidnapper jumped on the train because he knew there would be a heavy price to pay for his crimes.
Since then, Natascha has embarked on a journey to catch up with a new life after a period of imprisonment. In 2009, Natascha became the face of the animal protection group PETA in Austria. In June of the same year, she wrote to the German agriculture minister and demanded the release of the animals in the zoo. "These animals would run away if they could, just like me, because a life in captivity is a life of deprivation," she wrote.
In September 2010, Natascha introduced her first memoir, but full of practical experience. She became boldly integrated into the community by answering the press, hosting the TV program "Talking with Natascha Kampusch". The book 3,096 days of living in "hell" of this brave girl marked Natascha's real integration with the community.
On February 28, 2013, Natascha Kampusch attended the premiere of a film with special meaning. This movie is produced based on her life span of 8 years of being kidnapped. The film, titled: Nightmare 3,096 Days, was released throughout Europe.
In 2016, Natascha released her second book titled "10 Years of Freedom", which recounts her journey to recovery after being freed. Those were the days when she struggled to forget painful memories with psychotherapy sessions. Gradually, she regained her life. Her income also increased significantly thanks to writing books.
Now, Ms. Natascha Kampusch has turned 33, it seems that this beautiful and strong woman will have a normal life as she always wished, but in reality it is not. Appearing in an interview with a German magazine, Natascha said that real life is inherently harsh, forcing her to realize that her nightmare is not over.
More than 12 years have passed since her liberation, and Natascha admits that she still doesn't feel completely free. She said, despite having her own career, Natascha still feels hurt by her dark past. She still receives negative messages from the public every day reminding her of those terrible times.
Among the many negative messages sent in by internet users, there are some that are particularly hurtful. They called her a hypocrite, a frivolous person or even expected her to return to her former captivity. Some have even suggested that her 3096-day imprisonment story contains fabricated details and most of it is exaggerated.
"They said that my imprisonment was not that bad. They said that I was just trying to make money and profit. Even many Facebook groups made up jokes about me being imprisoned. How they were locked up in the basement. They hurt me so much. People acted like it was my luck to be locked up like that," Natascha Kampusch shared in an interview.
There are even many people who doubt the authenticity of the story. They wondered why Natascha hadn't managed to escape from the cellar as soon as possible. "Cyber violence has become a part of my daily life. There are times when I don't even want to go out because of those hurtful words. But I don't want to give up and that's why. , I have to talk about what I'm going through right now," the woman said.
Natascha has tried to shake off the past, but sometimes she finds it difficult to do so. Most recently, she wanted to sell the kidnapper's house she was given when he died to a group of refugees. However, the neighbors and local authorities did not want her to do so. She still has to pay electricity, water, and taxes for the very house in which she was imprisoned. It still exists today and so do Natascha's nightmares.
Natascha currently doesn't have a boyfriend, but sometimes she still imagines what it would be like to be a mother one day. "I've always wanted to have a baby, but I have to be more realistic, that's not possible right now," she said.
Even so, Natascha said she is trying to find inner peace through her passion for horseback riding with a horse named "Loreley". While with Loreley, Natascha forgets everything. As she rode, Natascha felt that the past no longer mattered, she was liberated and truly free.
"Being friends with a horse is easy, uncomplicated, and everything is fine. In the world out there, I've learned to ignore all the hate directed at me and only accept the good things that I don't have. okay," Natascha confided.
