Because she portrayed villainous roles so realistically, actress Kieu Mai Ly was intensely disliked by audiences for a long time. For her, however, that was a proud milestone, a testament to her dedication and the success of her career.
The latest episode of the show "Evening Stories with Stars," featuring artist Kieu Mai Ly, has attracted considerable attention from viewers. At 76 years old, the veteran artist had the opportunity to reflect on her more than six decades of dedication to the arts, while also sharing many memories and professional perspectives that moved the audience.
Appearing on the program, Kieu Mai Ly couldn't hide her pride when talking about her early connection to Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera). She shared: "I came to art early. From the age of 12, I was so fascinated by Cai Luong that I lost track of time. After school, I would look for rehearsals to watch, so captivated that my family had to come find me. That love grew, deeply ingrained in my subconscious, to the point that I even sang in my sleep." According to the female artist, this pure passion became a crucial foundation.
Throughout her decades-long acting career, Kieu Mai Ly has taken on a wide range of roles, from tragic heroines and social dramas to villains and comedies. When asked about her most memorable roles, she is particularly impressed by the character of Mrs. Hai Luan in the film "Half a Lifetime of Fragrance and Powder." The actress recounted: "One of the roles that left the deepest impression on me was Mrs. Hai Luan, the scheming villain in 'Half a Lifetime of Fragrance and Powder.' Because of this role, I was intensely hated by the audience for my extreme cruelty. That was a success for me because I was able to immerse myself in the role and elevate the emotions." For her, being "hated" by the audience is the clearest proof of the success of a villainous role.
Sharing her secrets to acting, Kieu Mai Ly believes the core lies in understanding the character's psychology. She emphasized: "The most important thing is to thoroughly study the character's psychology so that the audience accepts the performance, even if the character's personality may be very different from your own."
Few people know that, despite starting out as an actress specializing in social and psychological dramas, Kiều Mai Lý naturally found her calling in comedy. She shared: "My starting point was playing social and psychological dramas, but I came to comedy by chance." Her initial comedic roles, though not easy, opened up a new path for her.
Thanks to her keen observation skills, relentless learning spirit, and persistent training, the female artist gradually won over audiences with her unique charm, remaining dedicated to comedy to this day.
For Kieu Mai Ly, the greatest happiness for an artist doesn't lie in fame or personal glory. She confided: "What makes me happiest is when the audience remembers the character I portray rather than my own name. For me, that is the greatest success of a professional, when the role lives on in the hearts of the public."
Looking back on over 60 years in her acting career, the actress couldn't hide her emotion when mentioning the enduring love that audiences have shown her. She affirmed: "Looking back on more than 60 years in acting, I am proud to have dedicated my heart and soul to art and received enduring love from the audience in return. I will never stop, because the dream of standing on stage has been with me since childhood. As long as I have the strength, I will continue in this profession."
