"They were plotting to harm a very large number of people, tens of thousands of people at the Taylor concert. I'm sure there were many Americans there," CIA deputy director David S. Cohen said at the annual Intelligence Summit in Washington, DC.
A CIA official said the suspects had planned to attack a large number of people attending a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna before they were stopped. Cohen did not say how the CIA learned of the attackers' plot, but he said the CIA and its partners in the intelligence community provided Austrian authorities with information that led to the arrest of the suspects, who are believed to be linked to the Islamic State.
âThe result was definitely hundreds of lives saved,â Cohen said. âA lot of people thought it was a really good day, not just for Swifties.â
Three Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna, Austria, were canceled in early August after authorities received reports of threats. The Times reported that about 200,000 people were expected to attend all three shows.
Three people have been arrested, including a 19-year-old Austrian who is considered the prime suspect. The others are a 17-year-old Austrian and an 18-year-old Iraqi. The names of the suspects have not yet been released. It is believed that the 19-year-old pledged allegiance to the IS leader in early July.
At a press conference on August 8, Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, head of the Austrian State Security and Intelligence Service, said the 19-year-old suspect admitted to intending to "carry out an attack" at Taylor Swift's concert using explosives and cold goods.
"His aim was to commit suicide and kill many people at the concert today or tomorrow," Mr. Omar said, according to Le Monde newspaper.
Taylor Swift spoke out about the incident more than 10 days after canceling her show in Austria and ending her European tour. On Instagram on August 22, the singer said she kept quiet at the time to avoid provoking those who wanted to harm her audience and waited for the right time to speak up.
She also apologized to fans in Austria for not being able to see the concert. "The reason for canceling the show has brought me new fear and a huge sense of guilt because so many people had planned to come. But I am also grateful to the authorities because thanks to them, we are only mourning the loss of concerts, not lives. I am overwhelmed by the love and solidarity of the fan community," Taylor wrote.
Talking about Taylor Swift's influence not only in the US UK entertainment industry but also in the political field such as the presidential election, her 'weight' also attracts attention.
The campaign was organized online on August 28. Although not officially affiliated with pop star Taylor Swift, the coalition leveraged the power of its fan community to attract attention and donations to the campaign.
The campaign featured a number of high-profile speakers, including Carole King and Senator Elizabeth Warren. Speakers repeatedly used Taylor Swift-related quotes and puns to connect with fans, who they hoped would become active volunteers in the upcoming election.
As the election approaches, the Swifties communityâs active participation, with or without direct support from Taylor Swift, has demonstrated the power of a passionate fan base to change the political landscape. The Swifties for Kamala coalition is a testament to the power of a community to create social change through connection and shared passion.
