Once a star with many admirable achievements and the most sought after in the film capital, Natalie Wood had a tragic ending that made fans feel sorry.
Natalie Woodâs deat.h at sea was not only a personal loss, but also expose.d the dark corners of Hollywood - where power, fame and secrets intertwine. It has been more than four decades since the incident, and justice has yet to be called. But with each passing year, each article resurrected, Natalie Woodâs name still appears as a reminder that there are heartbreakingly beautiful Hollywood dreams and there are also secrets that sink forever into the Catalina night water.
On Thanksgiving weekend in 1981, Natalie Wood, her husband Robert Wagner, co-star Christopher Walken, and Captain Dennis Davern took a short cruise on the Splendour. What was supposed to be a relaxing vacation at sea turned out to be the final chapter in the actressâs life.
The Los Angeles Times on November 30, 1981, carried a shocking headline: "Actress Natalie Wood Found Dead Near Catalina Island." Police described the deat.h as an "unfortunate acciden.t" with no signs of foul play.
Forensic documents later released revealed something suspicious. There were new bruises on Natalie Woodâs arms, neck, knees and inner thighs. There was no evidence that the bruises occurred after she fell into the water.
The only initial explanation was that Natalie may have hit the hull of the boat when she fell. However, according to renowned forensic expert Dr. Michael Baden, who reviewed the records, "The bruises are not consistent with accidental impact. Some look like handprints or grip marks. They are injuries caused by a struggle or force."
Captain Dennis Davern initially kept quiet, but in 2000 he began to speak out in the media. "I heard Natalie Wood and Robert Wagner arguing in the cabin. Then there was a crash, then silence. I wanted to help but Robert Wagner told me not to interfere," he said.
In the book "Goodbye Natalie", by Goodbye Splendour (2009), Dennis Davern also revealed the shocking detail: "Wagner stood on the deck, drinking, and said: 'Where is she? She's gone. Leave her alone!' and went inside without looking for anything else. It was not until the next morning that he called for help."
The captain himself signed a statement saying that Natalie Wood âmay have tried to leave the ship in a lifeboatââa lie he later admitted was made at the behest of Robert Wagner. Later, an anonymous witnes.s on Catalina Island called the police after hearing a woman screaming, âHelp!ââbut it was unclear where it was coming from.
In 2012, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office announced the decision to change Natalie Wood's cause of deat.h from accidental drownin.g to drownin.g and undetermined factors. In 2013 (32 years after the case), the National Enquirer - a magazine specializing in the private lives of artists - revealed a shocking secret.
Accordingly, on the night of the tragedy, Natalie Wood accidentally walked into the room and caught Robert Wagner and actor Christopher Walken having se.x. And this could very well have led to a series of actions that later caused the deat.h of the female star.
That same year, in a 10-page appendix to Natalie Woodâs forensic file, the police added information that Natalie Wood had suffered multiple scratches on her arms, neck, and face before she drowne.d. However, time has passed, much evidence has disappeared, and the legal effect has faltered due to the lack of a basis for prosecution.
In 2018, police investigators reopened the case and this time targeted Robert Wagner. Police revealed that they had discovered that Wagner was the last person to see his wife alive, and that her husband had changed his story.
LAPD spokeswoman Nicole Nishida added that this is the first time they have new witnesses to the circumstances of what happened on the train that fateful night. "One witnes.s said they heard screams and loud noises in the cabin area of the train. Another said they heard a man and a woman arguing in the back of the train.
Everyone believed that it was the voice of Natalie and Robert Wagner. The information above is very different from what was previously given. This allows us to continue the investigation and possibly lift the veil of truth that has been hidden for the past 37 years," Ms. Nicole Nishida affirmed. However, since then, the story has remained an unsolved mystery.
