According to Korean media, singer Yubin - former member of Wonder Girls group has publicly announced her relationship with professional tennis player Kwon Soon Woo.
Kim Yubin (1988) was born in South Korea. She debuted as a rapper in the group Wonder Girls in 2007. She attended Myongji University. Yunbin is fluent in Korean and English. Yubin joined Wonder Girls just 3 days before the group's comeback with the hit single Tell Me in 2007.
In 2008, the group continued to solidify their position as the top Kpop girl group when they released the song So Hot, then later that year released Nobody, the song became a phenomenon not only in Korea but all over the world, especially in the US.
Realizing the popularity of Wonder Girls in the US, in 2009, JYP released an English version of the song Nobody. And this move by JYP was a great success, making Wonder Girls the first Asian artists to enter the prestigious Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at number 76.
From here, JYP began to focus on Wonder Girls' international promotions. The group toured with the Jonas Brothers in 2009 and planned to hold their own concert, but this plan was postponed when Sunmi suddenly stopped working in January 2010 to focus on her studies, as she had to drop out of middle school to promote with the group in the US.
In 2020, Yubin left JYP Entertainment after 13 years and founded Le Entertainment. She then released a single and began her solo career.
In 2020, Yubin made a comeback with the single "yaya (ME TIME)" featuring the title track of the same name. This was her first comeback since leaving JYP. She said that she left JYP Entertainment because she felt comfortable enough after being in the same place for so long, and this was also expressed in the song above. "Wow, I'm free now. The weather is so nice today. Let's go out. Thanks to JYP, I'm free now. It's so comfortable and sweet. Healthy organic meals, the taste of MSG in my mouth is very noticeable." The lyrics clearly express her gratitude to her former agency.
Yubin said that she has contacted members Yeeun and Sunmi about her agency. However, it is difficult because the remaining members are active in different entertainment companies. If that does not work out, Yubin hopes that the group can reunite through a song or stage.
On May 22, Yubin's management company confirmed that she is in a relationship with Kwon Soon Woo. Previously, the couple was rumored to be dating for a long time. It is known that this tennis star is 9 years younger than her. A representative of Yubin's management company said. "It is true that the two are in a good relationship. However, we do not have detailed information because this is the artist's private life."
In February 2023, Yubin attended the 2023 Davis Cup finals in Seoul. In this tournament, Kwon Soon Wo reached the round of 16 for the second year in a row. Rumors have it that the two had dinner together after this victory. Rumors of the two dating later spread throughout the sports world.
Not long ago, the couple was suspected of having a rift when the female singer born in 1988 suddenly deleted all photos of her boyfriend on her personal page. Today (October 5), Yubin's representative has officially clarified the status of her relationship with tennis player Kwon through a brief announcement: "Yubin and Kwon Soon Woo have 'gone their separate ways'. Although they are no longer dating, they still maintain a good friendship." Thus, the couple, who have a 9-year age gap, have officially broken up after only 5 months of making their relationship public.
Kwon Soon Woo suddenly became a "thorn" in the eyes of the Korean public after a humiliating defeat to a player 524 places lower on the rankings right in the second round of the 2022 ASIAD. Notably, the athlete surnamed Kwon also had a series of unsportsmanlike actions right on the clay court such as smashing his racket and not shaking his opponent's hand after the match ended. From here, Kwon Soon Woo was heavily criticized by netizens, demanding that he break up with Yubin.
On Korean social networking forums, netizens competed to "brick and stone" Kwon Soon Woo, opposing the love affair between the male athlete and the former member of the legendary group: "I didn't even know they were dating. But Yubin, run away now", "Are the two of them married yet? If not, the girl should break up immediately", "If Yubin were my daughter, I would never let her date and marry a rude person like Kwon Soon Woo".
Kwon Soon Woo is a professional tennis player from South Korea. He was highly regarded by experts when he was close to the top 50 ATP rankings. In his career, Kwon made his mark when he reached the third round of the French Open in 2021. He also reached the semi-finals of an ATP Tour 500 tournament - Japan Open 2022.
This is the second time Yubin's boyfriend represents Korea at the 19th ASIAD. At the Games 5 years ago, he reached the quarterfinals and was stopped by his Indian opponent - Prajnesh Gunneswaran.
