The image of the K-pop idol caused a stir all over social media sites when she smiled revealing her teeth. A lot of controversy revolves around the photo, while revealing the harshness of the Korean entertainment industry.
Born on January 27, 2011, Im Seo Won is the youngest member of idol group UNIS. She debuted as a solo artist in 2021 and is best known for participating in Miss Trot 2.
Although Seo Won's singing and dancing skills are highly appreciated. The singer, who is about to turn 13, has a pretty face, when she smiled to reveal her teeth because the new teeth have not yet fully grown. This has sparked controversy on social media recently. Many argue that Seo Won is too young to enter showbiz and may "lose his childhood" if he pursues his dream of becoming an idol singer.
Last November, a new SBS Korean music idol casting program titled "Universe Ticket" began airing. Following the success of previous survival shows, such as A2K, Universe Ticket claims that it will create a "global K-pop group."
Like so many other Korean survival shows, the winning lineup doesn't always please everyone. But this time, the debut age of the Unis members shocked many viewers.
The group has 3 members born in 2007 - ie 16 years old; 3 members were born in 2009 - i.e. 14 years old; and the youngest member of the group is Lim Seowon, born in 2011 â 12 years old.
Jin Hyeon Ju is the only adult member of the group, at the age of 22. This also makes the age gap between her and the other members at least 6 years old and at most 10 years old.
Not to mention that the group's debut age was so small, some viewers mocked Unis' lineup as arranging for a Gen 3 idol to be in the same group as Gen 5 idols.
Debuting to the public and becoming successful is the desire of many Kpop trainees. However, in exchange for that glory, idols have to trade a lot when spending their youth training, and suffer the consequences of being famous too early.
Being an idol as a teenager is not a new phenomenon in the K-pop industry. Since the 2000s, BoA has debuted when she was 13 years old, SHINee's Taemin debuted at 14 years old in 2008. But the age of idols is decreasing and this trend begins to bloom at the end of gen 3, beginning of the 4th generation of idols.
Recently, HYBE NewJeans' brand new girl group was introduced to the public, with the youngest member born in 2008, still a middle school student.
Previously, some girl groups caused controversy when they had younger members in the lineup. Like the groups IVE, NewJeans, Baby Monster all have the youngest children (Leeseo, Hyein, Chiquita respectively) debuted at the age of 14...
Becoming an idol is the dream of thousands of young Koreans every year. Be famous, financially capable and loved by everyone. The outstanding perks of becoming an idol will start early and have plenty of time to build a career will be released early. But the Korean music industry is full of pressure and the market is full of pressure, not every idol who debuts will achieve success.
The rigors of the idol training system cause many trainees to be cut off from real life. Even after becoming stars, many stars still find it difficult to process emotions or cope with stress. Idols who are too young are susceptible to psychological effects when they encounter too many controversial opinions of netizens, falling into uncontrolled behavior, which many celebrities do.
