In recent years, beauty pageants around the world have lost their appeal. The image of a beauty crowned Miss is no longer a symbol of beauty and talent or a stepping stone to enter the world of showbiz.
In the heyday of beauty pageants, when each contest attracted millions of viewers, the image of the beauty queen was a combination of beauty and intelligence, a symbol of feminism and inclusiveness in society. The winners were often the ideal model of beauty, talent and noble qualities, opening the door for them to enter the entertainment industry and become top stars. In many countries, the appearance of the crowned beauties was a source of national pride.
But in recent years, interest in beauty pageants has waned, especially in Western countries. Where they were once well-received, the winners are no longer given the kind of reception they deserve. Their images no longer sparkle in the pages of newspapers or at high-profile events as they once did.
A clear example is the Spanish audience's rejection of Mireia Lalaguna, Miss World 2015. When she returned to her country after being crowned, there were no crowds of fans or any events to welcome her, only her family and relatives. This is no coincidence. Spain, like many other countries, has begun to change its view on beauty pageants, believing that these competitions are not simply a playground for beauty but also reduce the value and dignity of women.
Not only is beauty pageants declining due to boredom, they have also been strongly condemned by the feminist movement. Feminist organizations argue that these pageants have turned women into objects to be judged, often requiring contestants to perform in bikinis or sex.y outfits so that others can judge their appearance. This has further increased the sensitivity towards beauty pageants, when women are not only judged by their physical beauty but also by their physical perfection.
Remember the years before, the beauties who were crowned Miss Universe or Miss World were considered symbols of perfection. But over time, most of the winners of these competitions have fallen into oblivion. Notable among them is Olivia Culpo, Miss Universe 2012. After being crowned, she received more attention from the American media and was often mentioned as the girlfriend of singer Nick Jonas. However, now, Olivia is only remembered as a model and a less prominent actress with some roles in mid-range films. Her career now seems to be less interested than before.
However, there are rare exceptions, when beauty queens become real stars. A typical example is Aishwarya Rai, Miss World 1994. She is not only known as the most beautiful beauty queen of all time but also a famous movie star in India. She is also the first Indian to sit on the jury at the Cannes Film Festival.
The decline of beauty pageants is not only due to the opposition of the feminist movement or the move of female stars to other fields, but also due to changes in social awareness. Nowadays, the public is no longer attracted by classic beauty criteria, but they are more interested in intelligence, talent and human values that individuals contribute to society.
The future of beauty pageants is still a big question mark. Can these pageants change to regain their inherent appeal or will they gradually fade into oblivion? This depends on how the pageant organizers can innovate and combine with contemporary values, to not only honor beauty but also recognize the intelligence, career and virtue of women.
