Cung Tien's real name is Cung Thuc Tien, born on November 27, 1938 in Hanoi. In Cung Tien's family, no one followed the path of music, but he himself was passionate about music since childhood. Cung Tien started performing arts when he was still an elementary school student, took singing lessons in churches, sang in Catholic choirs and was assigned to conduct school choirs when he reached high school.
Since childhood, Cung Tien studied music at Nguyen Trai High School while in Hanoi. In 1952, he and his family moved to Saigon and took classes in notation and vocalization led by two famous musicians, Tham Oanh and Chung Quan.
In 1953, Cung Tien released his first song called "Golden Thu", then "Hoai Cam" composed in the same year. Both songs were composed by him when he was only 14.15 years old, but the lyrics in them show the maturity and maturity in the author's own composition.
With deep, romantic and easy-to-understand lyrics, Cung Tien's first two songs quickly became popular and since then, Cung Tien has been called a musical prodigy when he was young. but has composed songs that are very valuable to the Vietnamese music scene.
In 1957, Cung Tien continued to release another life-changing song called "Old Perfume", dedicated to his close friend Khuat Duy Trac (singer Duy Trac), Duy Trac was also the performer. the most successful of this song.
"Old Perfume" is the perfect combination between Western music and Asian-style lyrics, the song mentions the classics of Tang Thi that not everyone can easily feel thoroughly.

At that time, he discovered other aspects of music, not only a melody, a melody but also many other elements that make up music. From then on, Cung Tien was very aware of the practice of popularizing poetry and putting music into poetry. In 1965, Cung Tien married a Vietnamese daughter from Marie Curie Girls' School in Saigon, the two knew each other when he was still studying in Australia.
From 1970 to 1973, Cung Tien received a master's scholarship from the British Council to study development economics at Cambridge University. During that time, he furthered his musical education by attending classes in music history, musicology, and modern music theory. Since then, Cung Tien's compositional style has also changed.
After 1975, while abroad, Cung Tien released the piece "Chinh Phu Yin" in 1987, composed for 21 instruments, first performed on March 27, 1988 in San Jose, California with San Jose Chamber Orchestra, and won the 1988 National Arts and Letters Award.
In 1992, Cung Tien completed the collection "Ta Return", poetry To Thuy Yen for vocals, recitation, recitation and a team of chamber instruments.
In 1993, Cung Tien composed "To Khuc Bac Ninh" for the symphony orchestra with the sponsorship of The Saint Paul Companies to study Bac Ninh quan ho music and other Vietnamese folk songs.
In 1997, with his professionalism and experience in music, Cung Tiến was ordered by the Dale Warland Singers choir to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of this internationally renowned choir.
In 2003, Cung Tien released a contemporary music composition "Lô Tho To Lieu Buong Manh" based on a Quan ho folk song. He is also a member of the Composers Association in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA.
In addition to composing music, Cung Tien also contributed many essays and comments on Vietnamese folk music as well as Western Modern music. In the field of literature, Cung Tien has also contributed literary compositions, judgments and criticisms, as well as translated for Creative, Perspective and Literary magazines under the pen name Thach Chuong.
Among them are Dostoevsky's "Memoirs in the basement" and Solzhenitsyn's "A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch" are two of the short stories he translated and published in Vietnam. After settling in the United States, he wrote for a number of newspapers under the pen name Dang Hoang.
When his age was late, Cung Tien retired and lived with his wife in Minnesota, his son lived in another state. Every day he lives peacefully next to his wife, his daily hobbies are playing with pets, reading books and writing music.
