In recent weeks, the news that HYBE Group was searched by South Korean police has created a big shock in the Kpop world. Many fans are concerned because this will affect BTS's comeback plans to some extent.
According to Korean media, the Financial Crimes Investigation Division of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Department has been issued a search warrant, effective until August 16 (Korean time), over the alleged fraudulent stock trading of CEO Bang Si Hyuk .
Notably, this search warrant includes a rare provision that allows searches to be carried out during the pre-dawn and post-sunset periods, bypassing the usual restrictions under Article 125 of the Criminal Procedure Law.
The scope of the search described as unusually broad, includes not only the president's office, the secretariat, the finance, accounting, and legal departments, but also extends to any other unnamed department that is capable of storing relevant documents.
Authorities believe the raid reflects the current administration's tough stance on market manipulation.
Although police confirmed that the search at HYBE's headquarters in Yongsan has ended, the investigation is continuing in coordination with the special judicial police and prosecutors of the Financial Supervisory Agency.
Previously, the Seoul police also twice requested a search warrant for HYBE's office and related individuals, but both were rejected by the prosecution.
At the same time, HYBE had to bear the consequences of the stock price falling by nearly 25% in just one day, after the case information related to HYBE employees and their subsidiaries (Source Music, BigHit, Belift Lab) was sanctioned with a suspended sentence for using inside information related to BTS's plan to suspend operations when enlisted in the army in 2022 to sell shares before the news open.
Although the current uproar mainly revolves around Mr. Bang's personal financial activities, the public is concerned that the investigation may disrupt or adversely affect BTS's comeback strategy. The group is expected to complete its military in June 2025 â RM and V on June 10, Jungkook and Jimin on June 11, Suga on June 21 â and is expected to officially reunite by the end of the year or early 2026.
Many expert opinions emphasize that BTS can still operate independently without direct direction from Mr. Bang, as they already have a strong personal background after a series of international solo activities.
In addition, BigHit's former Chief Communications Officer, Elly Chae Eun , has publicly accused HYBE and Mr. Bang of creating a toxic and unfair work environment that favors insiders, and HYBE has distributed tens to hundreds of billions of won to people who have not contributed since the early days of its establishment.
While BTS is not even involved in these unethical acts. Even so, she made it clear that BTS was not blamed for any wrongdoing and had received a fair share of shares at the time of the IPO, about 68,000 shares per person (~$6.7 million at the price at that time).
Legally, there is no evidence so far that BTS or the members are involved in HYBE's financial transparency practices. All the allegations focus on Bang and some individuals in the company, not directly related to BTS or the group's artistic plans.
Responding to the press, the CEO of HYBE affirmed that the group is still in the process of producing new content and all 7 members are participating in preparing for a comeback after all complete their military service.
BTS currently plays a major role in HYBE's shareholder structure (about 1.1% in total), is a large group of artists contributing to HYBE's becoming a leading entertainment group.
Each member has significant solo potential, having developed a strong personal image both in Korea and internationally. According to music and entertainment experts, even if HYBE's collective image is affected, BTS still has the strength to operate effectively, even in the scenario of a full reunion in late 2025 or early 2026.
