Amy's talent is undeniable, but Amy didn't have the right perspective to develop her already expansive career. She allowed her talent to be buried with alcohol and drugs.
Amy Winehouse was born on September 14, 1983 in England. She is known for her emotional voice and musical style that combines soul, jazz, and R&B. Amy is one of the most talented and powerful artists for pop music.
Amy Winehouse began showing a passion for music at a very young age and has participated in singing performances at bars and small events. In 2003, she released her debut album titled "Frank", which showed a diversity of musical styles and attracted attention from the professional world.
However, Amy Winehouse's real success came from her second album Back to Black, which was released in 2006. This album beat many records and earned her important Grammy awards such as "Album of the Year", "Song of the Year" and "Record of the Year". The most famous track from this album is "Rehab".
Amy Winehouse suffers from many psychological and health problems, her name is associated with legal violations and substance use. The mental breakdown coupled with pressure from the media and the public adversely impacted her career and life. She died on July 23, 2011 at her home in London, aged 27. The cause is believed to be an accident due to the effects of addictive substances.
Amy Winehouse leaves behind a proud musical legacy and is still celebrated as one of the best vocalists of her generation.
On the occasion of Amy's 40th birthday, her parents Mitch and Janis shared excerpts from her personal diaries with The Telegraph.
"On September 14, 1983, Amy came into the world. She was born 4 days late and we always joked that Amy was always late, even her birth. From the moment we brought her home from the hospital, Amy was a personality child. Amy is adorable and charming, but when she's not having fun, everyone knows. "Shut up, Amy!" is probably the most heard phrase in the house. Whether happy or sad, Amy always loved the spotlight," Amy's parents shared.
Amy's diary coincides with her parents' observations, showing the singer has been aware and comfortable embracing her differences since adolescence. "I'm glad I'm different. I don't want to be like anyone else. I like to have my own style. I like to talk out loud and talk to people. It was simply me," she wrote in her diary.
"Amy was constantly updating, recording her school days in a notebook. She described what she did, even being yelled at by her teachers. From the beginning, we realized that school probably never satisfied Amy. "I'm bored," Amy used to say.
The teacher said Amy was smart and capable, but there was always a "but" after that. She couldn't sit still. Instead, Amy is passionate about movies, musicals, novels, poetry and music. She can memorize the lyrics and sing them again after listening to the song once or twice. At her grandmother's house, she was immersed in jazz. From Frank Sinatra to Ella Fitzgerald. At home, she sang songs from the movie Mary Poppins or Jewish holy music."
Like any teen diary, Amy's page is full of reflections on love. She reflected: "Sometimes I think, is there someone, some guy as crazy as me? A nice guy with dark hair, glasses for reading and a true lover of Indie music? He has a Scottish or Irish accent which is best! And why all my brother's friends fit this description, but I'm too young to do anything about it."
The biggest influence on the singer's life was her ex-husband, Blake Fielder-Civil. They knew each other for 6 years and were married from 2007 to 2009. The two met in a pub in Camden Town, London. At the time, they were both dating other people. The attraction happened instantly and Amy quickly left her boyfriend to be with Blake. After only a month, she had his name tattooed on his left chest area and Blake also had Amy's name tattooed behind his ear. Both are believed to have abused alcohol and illegal substances, as well as been involved in numerous legal issues. Blake received a 32-month prison sentence for armed robbery upon learning of Amy's death in 2011. After breaking up with Fielder-Civil, Amy Winehouse had a four-month relationship with film director Reg Traviss, which ended after she heard of his affair.
In his diary, Winehouse admitted his temper. She was sometimes "violent towards those she loved." Although Amy always said "I'm sorry" afterwards. But she knew they forgave but would never forget.
In her notebooks, Amy Winehouse also writes music and shares humorous observations about the people she meets at pubs, clubs, and wherever she goes. What she wrote in her diary was like lyrics, recording her life. Like the song "Rehab", one of Amy's most famous songs, in which she writes about her rehab process.
Amy's parents said they found it difficult to read their daughter's diaries. "Although many people talk about Amy's painful life, we rarely see her share her sadness in her diary. Still, we understand her. Making music was a way for her to relax. Certainly when she was happiest, or experiencing her darkest moments when she was addicted to drugs, Amy focused on making music.
Although it was difficult, Mitch and Janis Winehouse said reading their daughter's diary eased their grief of loss. "Twelve years after Amy's death, looking back at these drawings and notes still makes us smile, as if she is still nearby. But we couldn't change Amy, who was addicted to drugs and had an unclear life. Addiction has also taken Amy's life, we are responsible for not paying attention to Amy.
