The HK$13 million lawsuit between Cecilia Cheung and her former manager, Yu Yu-hing, is becoming the focus of Hong Kong media attention. The latest developments in court not only exonerate her but also expose the harsh pitfalls within the entertainment industry.
Their relationship stemmed from financial burdens.
The story began in 2011, when Cecilia Cheung urgently needed HK$40 million for real estate investment. Seizing this opportunity, Yu Yu-Hing – then an investor in the film "Lioness of the East 2" – arranged with Bona Group to advance the money to her as payment for four future film projects.
Trusting in Yu's ability to raise capital and his connections, Cecilia Cheung signed an 8-year exclusive management contract. In 2012, the two parties signed an additional contract for two more films. However, this marked the beginning of a series of legal troubles that lasted for more than a decade.
"Ghost" contracts and suspected forged signatures.
At the Hong Kong High Court, Cecilia Cheung's side presented sharp arguments to refute the "breach of contract" accusation. According to the Beijing Dialogue, Yu Yuxing's company was actually liquidated in 2013. Legally, the contract between the two parties terminated at that time.
However, Yu Yuxing was accused of secretly transferring the image rights of the actress to another entity without notification. Cecilia Cheung asserted that the signatures on these transfer documents were forged and requested a forensic examination. Even if the signatures were genuine, legal experts believe the contract could still be terminated because the management company intentionally concealed its financial and legal status, causing serious misunderstanding for the artist.
Deceptive tactic: "Cicada shedding its skin" using cancer as a cover-up.
Cecilia Cheung's testimony in court also revealed a shocking truth about the ethics of her former manager. In 2014, Yu Yuxing received 2 million yuan in advance from Oriental Television in her name but then withheld the money. When the matter came to light, Cecilia Cheung was not only sued by the television station but also suffered losses of 7 million yuan to resolve the consequences.
Even more outrageously, when the actress considered seeking legal intervention, Yu Yuxing resorted to a "pity ploy," faking cancer to beg for forgiveness. Out of compassion, Zhang Baizhi chose to remain silent and end their collaboration instead of bringing the matter to light. After years of absence and failed business ventures in mainland China, in 2020, Yu Yuxing unexpectedly returned, playing the victim and suing her for defaulting on a debt.
The dark side of "slave contracts"
Media analysis reveals that out of six film projects signed, Yu Yuxing only completed one. The remaining five projects remained entirely on paper due to the poor production capabilities of his management. This shows that Cecilia Cheung was not shirking responsibility; rather, Yu Yuxing's side failed to provide her with the opportunity to fulfill her obligations through acting.
Cecilia Cheung's case serves as a wake-up call about the situation where artists are turned into "money-making machines" through unfair terms. The lack of legal support and misplaced trust led the Hong Kong "goddess" to suffer a mental breakdown, even breaking down in tears in court when humiliated and accused of ingratitude.
Currently, the public is siding with Cecilia Cheung, hoping that the fairness of the law will help her escape this unjust debt trap.
