Trieu Lo Tu made the audience choke up with her role that touched on secret pain, revealing hidden corners that few people dare to face in the family, leaving deep obsession and lingering echoes that are hard to forget.
The film Let Me Shine not only attracts attention because of its glamorous upper-class setting, but also evokes many thoughts about injustice in the family. Through the character Hua Nghien (played by Trieu Lo Tu), the audience witnesses the sorrowful journey of a girl growing up with the biased love of her parents.
Few people know that Hua Nghien's real name is Kieu Nghien, the youngest child in an ordinary family. Right from birth, her fate was ironic: she had a congenital heart disease, and because she was a girl, her parents were about to abandon her. Thanks to her grandmother's care, Kieu Nghien had a chance to survive.
When she was old enough to return home, Hua Yan realized that her position had always been obscured. In her parents' eyes, only her older sister, Qiao Lin, deserved their attention. From forgotten birthdays to dangerous times like gas leaks, Hua Yan was always put behind her sister. Even when they were both hospitalized, her parents' care was only for their eldest daughter.
The pent-up pain exploded when Hua Yan was deprived of the opportunity to go to university. Her parents thought that the family could only afford one person, and that person was definitely Kieu Lam â even though her academic results were not outstanding. On the contrary, Hua Yan, who was hard-working and intelligent, was still forced to give up her dream.
The most haunting scene is when the character bursts into tears in the rain, questioning his father: "Why, from childhood to adulthood, has everything good belonged to you? Am I your biological child that your parents have never loved me?". That resentment touches the hearts of viewers, because it is not only a tragedy on screen, but also reflects reality in real life.
Once again, her grandmother became her sole support, helping Hua Nghien pay her tuition. She studied and worked many jobs to support herself and send money back to her grandmother. The pain of abandonment made Hua Nghien decide to cut ties with her parents, change her last name to Hua and register a separate household with just her and her grandmother.
When she entered the upper class world, she understood that the truth about her poor family could not be brought to light. Therefore, Hua Nghien hired "fake parents", created a cover of intellectuals, with parents who were foreign university lecturers. This act helped her hide her past, put on the image of a perfect young lady to step into the marriage door.
Hua Nghien's story reflects a not uncommon reality. Many children, from birth, have to live with comparisons, considered "less important" simply because of their gender, health or not meeting their parents' expectations.
The differences often start with small details: one birthday is remembered, the other forgotten; one is protected from danger, the other left to fend for itself. These repeated scratches add up to an obsession: a feeling of invisibility even in oneâs own home.
Not only does it affect the feelings, favoritism also has a direct impact on the future. When the family is in trouble, parents choose to prioritize one child, leaving the other to sacrifice. As a result, the abandoned children are forced to fend for themselves, shouldering the burden that their parents should have shared.
Even when they grow up, these children may become strong and independent, but deep down there is still a deep scar that is difficult to erase. They crave recognition, to be loved equally, and that is an emotional void that nothing can fill.
