Zhao Liying has become the focus of discussion as the effectiveness of her recent projects has not maintained the same level as before, while many of her contemporaries, especially Yang Mi, have maintained a stable level of attention and appeal.
Chinese media acknowledges that the actress, born in 1987, possesses a considerable body of work and was once dubbed the "Queen of Ratings" or "Television Drama Guarantee" thanks to her achievements between 2015 and 2020. However, current market data and feedback suggest that her position is no longer as secure as before.
Most recently, the project "Xiao Cheng Da Shi" (A Small Success, a Big Event) marked the collaboration between Zhao Liying and Huang Xiaoming, and was broadcast on CCTV8. The prime-time slot was considered an advantage, making the drama more accessible to a wider audience. However, the viewership on the first day only reached just over six million online views, which was deemed insufficient to meet expectations for a project featuring A-list actors. In the following days, instead of increasing, the viewership showed a stagnant and declining trend. This made it difficult for the drama to retain viewers and create a widespread impact.
Specifically, from episode 2 onwards, the ratings didn't increase, with a popularity index of only around 23,000 points, quite low for a major project like "Little City, Big Event." More importantly, the number of comments and mentions of the film on social media was also low, indicating a lack of audience interest in the project.
Furthermore, Zhao Liying's performance in the lead role received mixed reviews. Some viewers felt that her portrayal lacked depth and emotional intensity. Meanwhile, Huang Xiaoming's performance was considered more outstanding, creating a contrast between the two actors. These reactions show that audience expectations for Zhao Liying remain high, especially given her previous successful and highly-rated roles.
In this context, Yang Mi's name is being compared. Yang Mi's recent works have been noted for more stable viewership and higher public interest. This has led many to comment that the gap between the two stars born in 1985 and 1987 has narrowed, in contrast to the period before when Zhao Liying was considered the clear favorite.
Alongside the issue of her performance in leading roles, Chinese media also highlighted a paradox in Zhao Liying's career: she once garnered significant attention for her cameo appearances. Some of her brief roles in previous projects created a positive impact, quickly propelling her to the top of search trends. Conversely, her recent longer leading roles have failed to generate the same level of discussion. This has led many viewers to question the actress's project selection strategy in recent times.
However, industry insiders still regard Zhao Liying as a hardworking actress with a clear direction in shifting towards dramatic works instead of just idol dramas. Choosing scripts with depth presents her with greater challenges, as well as pressure from audiences who are used to seeing her in highly entertaining characters.
Duong Mich declared that she will never make peace with Trieu Le Dinh for 1 reason.
